I did that when I was in high school, I live with my sister though and she was busy with work and stuff so practically I live alone. That's not living alone. Not even close. Baby.
But technically I am, sister never home, got money sent from parents separately, cook for myself by myself, what's the difference?
The difference between practically and actually is immense. Bills and paperwork are the first things to come to mind. Managing your budget. Actually start to give a shit about cleaning after a while, too.
Nope, we managed our own bills too, hell, I live in Australia for more than 5 years now, parents only send money for Tuition and rent and have only around $400 to spend on other things. Have to get a part time job to have money to spend for myself.
We live in our own world, just because we live together doesn't mean the bills and stuff is taken care of. the only reason why my parents asked me to live with her is to make it easier when they come visit.
Also, we hardly cook, usually buy stuff unless I or she feels like cooking, and that's only for individual.
Anyone can say I'm not living alone, which is true, but it doesn't make a difference whether I chose to rent or buy my own unit or live together with her, since in 'our' home, the rule of 'every human for themselves' applies.

Take that out of the equation and recalculate.

Be specific so I can calculate how much I personally spend and compare.

Take the money that your parents send you (tuition and rent) and add that to what you currently spend over a year.

I'd have around $100-$200 spare if I calculate excluding my wages from my part time job. Simply because I spend over $1000 on both of my holidays to Sydney and Goldcoast. Not yet including my homecoming this June.
I don't get you, the point of this thread was whether highschool students could live by themselves, right?
If you're thinking that I live alone but still relying on my parents, you're right. Is this what you're trying to prove?

Boils down to definitions, I think.
The term "living alone", in my mind, entails "self-sufficient" as well. Not just living alone, as in without company.
Call it semantics between "living alone" and "living away/abroad".

I don't know, the ones I've read, their parents pay for their appartments (cause their parents are rich) Others their parents just pay for it, and others the student just pays it off for themselves (has a few jobs and what not. Only seen like two anime with that, though)

There you go. I thought this thread was about students (high school in particular) living alone as in no parents or guardians there living with them.
Our definition of living alone is the same, I'm just proving my point to you and Tsujoi relevantly to this thread alone without any other intentions.
Most animes and mangas have MCs live alone with their basic expenses covered anyway, I was proving that it is possible to have it that way, and it's not a rare case.

It was actually about Middle and high schoolers living along in Japan

From what I've seen so far, highschool students are able to live "alone" (away from family) in certain cases. They tend to be a bit picky on which school they want to go to (American equivalent: Deciding what College you want to go to). If it is too far to commute, they can sometimes "rent" property closer to the school. The parents are financially responsible for them, and there is usually no real issue.. at least, from what I have seen so far.
