Well, the director had to prove to Italian authorities that he didn't make a snuff film, and around 7 animals are actually killed on camera. The actual plot (The piece of shit that it is) is about some fucking people that go to Africa or South America to find some film-makers that made a documentary about this cannibal tribe. That's the basic premise.

I see. . . I'll probably just watch some scenes on youtube i guess, isn't there a sequel to it as well?

Cannibal Holocaust is, well not a film for everyone-yes its true that several animals were actually killed for it and the movie has been banned in several countries, it was the first in many cannibal genre films that, all fallowed roughly the same style, plot and animal abuse problems (Eaten Alive, Emmanualle and the Last Cannibals, Cannibal Ferox). Though Cannibal Holocaust remains the most notorious. The way the movie flows is it goes back and forth to the Robert Kerman character in normal time, going to the amazon jungle to recover film and information on a documentary crew that had vanished a few weeks prior, when he finds the movie most of the movie from then on is the characters watching the film and learning the fate of the filmamkers.
(Interesting note-the first documentary they show "Last Road to Hell" features stock footage of real executions- oh yeah, that's real people dying!) so we have both animal and human death on screen, creates an atmosphere, and certainly something most don't actually realize.
There were several unofficial sequels but the movie its self is stand alone (though Robert Kerman would be in a few other cannibal movies, basically playing the same character). I find the movie is either very shocking to people, or not shocking at all (often times they either are unphased at the violence, or they don't understand the real magnitude it extended). The director really wanted authentic suffering and there are several stories about it online to read.
There is no middle ground here, it is truly the most powerful of the cannibal films, and if you should see any of them, see this one (second I'd say Cannibal Ferox, for nothing else but this awesome theme song)

oh and Anguis Maestus, I am sure you'd be interested in the other Caligula movies made, because Caligula needs a lot of sleazy movies somewhat true to his life (made in Italy)

Bruno Mattei made 2 that I know of
Caligula: The Untold Story was directed by Joe D'Amato (who made Emmanualle and the Last Cannibals and movies like Porno Holocaust and Erotic Nights of the Living Dead)

lol I've heard of Porno Holocaust, I do believe that is the one where a women is killed with a man's penis? And I do know about the infamous Bruno Mattei.

yes that is the one
Bruno Mattei doesn't just make porn, he also made one of my favorite action movies- Strike Commando (starring Reb Brown)
I should make a B-movie topic

oddly enough i saw this movie on the movie rack at a borders book store.... i was like wtf?...I'm not surprised. Borders has a wide range of disturbing horror films.
My friend who is hardcore into disturbing movies had me pick up a DVD from a Borders. I can't recall what the movie was...but I do know it is pretty controversial.

I've known about this for a couple of years; have been meaning to watch it since, just out of curiosity. It's just that mental barrier that's been stopping me. I had the same thing with The Human Centipede. :p
Has anyone heard of A Serbian Film? Makes this look like The Jungle Book.
