I'm sure we've all had an idea of a character that describes us best, whether it be from an fanfic or an MMO.
Don't you find that your own dreams and personality seem to embed itself in each creation you make?
For example, I used to RP on a forum site when I was younger. I had about 4 different characters I used, but two of them I seemed to use the most.
One was a guy named Kal, and he represented my more brave side, and my conviction. My second, was a girl named Aria, who represented my timidness, but also my kindness and compassion.
My personality even extends to my Final Fantasy 14 character, Astra. She is basically my smarts, and my mysterious side. She's actually the kitty-girl in my avatar, making stuff with her Alchemy. :)
Has anyone else done something similar to this? Or at least noticed something similar?

I'd say that sometimes my characters take after me more than I originally intended them to. Almost all of my characters have some part of me in them. Some more than others, of course.

I try not to make things get out of hand, and I very seldom put anything of myself anywhere, apart from cameos for the lulz in my stories.

I used to do that a lot haha but I hate the thought of being mary sue so I kind of stopped. but since each human does have some kindness and some mean sides to them just because you have a few things in common with a character you created I don't think it is an absolute reflection of yourself. Because then wouldn't you only be allowed to make characters who are the completely opposite of yourself?
I think most creators create a character thinking of different people around them and maybe take few things from themselves to make a character which both include the bad and good sides to make them seem more human. And then maybe in a given situation they would perhaps think what would they do, what would their friends do and with the character's given personality what would they do in the situation. Sometimes it would be more suited to do the thing you would do yourself but I think most people would go with the character's personality even if it meant doing something ridiculous or stupid.

Whenever I am creating a character in essence of myself, I will usually make them very strong (swordsman or a marksman) or very agile and swift (thief or assassin). I look at the world I am battling through and I know that I want to have the power to face things head on and with a clear mind. I see what my end result should be and I create a way to get there through my own means. I also don't have time to waste on things such as magic or through the arcane arts and prefer to use my own two hands to physically take my opponents down.... or I am terrible and make other's do my bidding by starting something and running away to watch from the shadows lol.
So for alignment within the realm of my characters usually would side with good-neutral; I usually don't fight for the dark side, but I am no true hero since I will use any means to get what I need.
Also somewhat shallow when I make my characters; usually pretty and sexy women (prefer pettanko characters) or hot men. I usually choose a human race, but I’ll also sometimes choose elves or feline-based races such as the khajiit in skyrim x3

The characters I write are seldom anything like me, but I think it is almost impossible for a writer to completely escape putting something of themselves into their work. Most writers have a distinctive 'voice' that becomes recognizable the more you read their works.
As I wrote my book, however, I was amazed at how invested in the main character I became. Even when I wasn't actually writing, I was almost obsessed with narrating the events of her life and considering scenarios. Even after I finished the last chapter, it took me months to shake the urge to continue the story.
Just keep writing, and eventually you will find your characters becoming their own unique individuals. The truth is that your characters were made for Role play, and it is a more personal mode of writing, because you have to more actively put yourself into your character's shoes. Try writing something different, other than role play or fan fiction, and I think you will find your scope as a writer will improve.

I give each of my characters at least one trait of mine (usually something small) it makes it so that I can relate to my characters and grow invested in them which helps develop them in my opinion

Two characters that i have writen a lot about are Mai and Talia. They were the first two characters in the first book i wrote, and im sentemental as fuck, so they stick aroud in my head and make cameo's in most of my other works. In the story im working on right now, and older lesbian couple runs the coffee house where my main character goes every day for lunch. Mai and Talia, you guessed it.

I've got a couple characters I like to write with but one of them is moreorless a carbon copy of me. His name is Kael, and he's a mercenary operator for an ancient and omniverse-spanning secret society dedicated to protecting the inhabitants from any and all threats against them. I designed Kael to be a badass, but he's not a paragon of righteousness.
He's brash, reckless, skilled and with the arrogance that goes along with it and is somewhat morally ambiguous, but also methodical and valorous. He's not what a classical person might cal a "man of honor", but he is a man of his word. A reviewer for an early story I wrote described Kael as an ideal realist; seeing the world as it is but also what it could become.
