You can use a multitude of software to clean up your computer like you can defrag your hard drive buy using programs like JKdfrag or smart defrag or use cleaning tools like CCleaner or you can see what is exactly hoging your space with a program called win dir stat
and you can find all of those programs on cnet.com and just go to the downloads page and search for them

Kind of Important
A ray of Tsunlight.
Wait. Are we talking of RAM, or actual HDD space? Cause 3.1gb is unusually small.

First, I suggest you get a bigger HDD. You can get 320s for like $65.
Anyway, for that I'd go along with what was said previous, defrag it, should free up a fair bit of space.

Seconding you buy a new hard drive, though are you using an old laptop or something? 'might be hard to switch out.
Can you explain this in greater detail, what it system restore or some fancy shamncy program you installed? Can you think back to any big things you deleted that might have come back?
Download a program called CCleaner, which can look into stuff like temporary internet files which might be taking up dead space. It's sort of like the "Disk Cleanup" function Windows can do, but it's a lot more specific and tends to analyze your computer a lot faster.

Indeed, CCleaner sounds good. You should give it a try.
Maybe there are some recovery files in the windows folder what it does sometimes when something was failed w/e.
In another words one of my friend comp's died suddenly and his DVD driver didn't work to use the repair method from the window's disc.
When finally with USB drive he could repair it and went to windows, was only few megabytes free space; there were thousands of temp -files which windows created everytime he had pressed the power button to see if his comp would start up.
Told him to delete those and everything was fine after that.
