According to a press release issued by Viz Media on Tuesday, the coalition's members include Square Enix, Viz Media, TOKYOPOP, Vertical, Inc., the Tuttle-Mori Agency, Yen Press, and the members of the Digital Comic Association: Akane Shinsha, Akita Shoten, ASCII Media Works, East Press, Ichijinsha, Enterbrain, Okura Shuppan, Ohzora Shuppan, Gakken, Kadokawa Shoten, Gentosha Comics, Kodansha, Jitsugyo No Nihonsha, Shueisha, Junet, Shogakukan, Shogakukan Shueisha Production, Shodensha, Shonen Gahosha, Shinshokan, Shinchosha, Take Shobo, Tatsumi Shuppan, Tokuma Shoten, Nihon Bungeisha, Hakusensha, Fujimi Shobo, Fusosha, Futabasha, France Shoin, Bunkasha, Houbunsha, Magazine House, Media Factory, Leed sha, and Libre Shuppan.
So they're finally going after manga scanlations, a lot of big names behind this too! I hope Fakku won't be affected/involved.
It seems our golden age of online manga freedom could be coming to an abrupt end...

Highly doubt Fakku will be involved, Onemanga and MangaFox I can see being targeted.
Bit of a shame really, I feel it'd be better if they just embraced this method of things, or do what Mangastream do, they take down certain chapters once they've been released in volumes.
Either way it'll be interesting to see how this rolls out.

Yes, I agree: the sites should be allowed to post non-licensed manga freely.
However, I also agree with the practice of taking down domestically published series as they need to do so for profit from the books.
Still, it seems the whole "but it's not licensed so why can't I upload it?" issue might come into question (or at least to light) now.

This is gonna play out the same way Metallica led all those groups in the "crusade" against Napster and all the people uploading and sharing their music for free. Its just gonna affect their sales negatively and let scanlators know they're doing something right.
Most of the major companies bitching about this shit are volumes behind what scanlators are putting out. Personally, I rely on scanlations because that's the only way I can keep up on my favorite manga. The companies holding the licenses are so caught up on making money that, not only have they dropped the ball, they don't even know where the fuck it is. If major companies are going to war with scanlators, I know where my fucking loyalties lie.
I'm not saying that I wouldn't buy manga from a major company if it was up to date. Although a lot of groups put out some high quality scanlations, they're far from professional. I wanna stay up to date the best way possible and even though I don't like paying for anything, if the product is worth it, I'll pay for it.
There's no doubt that FAKKU will be unaffected by this bullshit because, in America at least, hentai is something people keep on the low low.

Well, with Napster is was files everywhere, sometimes hard to trace ones.
With these sites, it direct uploads of what's clearly (maybe) property of someone else... they have a point and the right.

FUCK. I want to see the ending of Naruto, One Piece, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, Highschool of The Dead and other mangas (Obviously, Bleach is not included).
I wish this movement would fail

you know shit was good till Waar became a mod. I think these are all clear signs of apocalypse (limewire getting sued, this waar on scanalation, etc.) & if the world really does end in 2012 its not because the fucking Mayans said so, its because Jacob made Waar a mod
I love dick in my ass.

I agree with everything said except for "Hentai is something people keep on the low low." 4Chan has become extremely popular in recent years within Canada and it is disturbing to see Guro and Loli distributed freely to a site where so many people can access it with just the click of a button. I know a fair amount of people who have actually found out about hentai just from 4Chan alone.
Hentai used to be kept away from the public eye back in the IRC days. Today, you can come across it just browsing google.

I think mainstream manga though is taking a harder hit than licensed hentai. I bet more people go after a naruto volume being released rather than an eromanga.

Yeah, but if the publishing companies find anything they own here, or elsewhere online...

I only can say this, FUCK OFFICAL MANGA COMPANIES
I STILL WANT MY NEW VOLUMES OF RAGNAROK INTO THE ABYSS AND SERAPHIC FEATHER
I STILL HOLD A GRUDGE OVER THOSE BEING CANCELED I THINK I STILL HAVE THE LAST CHAPTERS FOR SERAPHIC FEATHERS THAT NEVER GOT PRINTED ON MY PC
Now that is out of the way. Maybe if they was less dickish and cancelling anything just cuz they felt like it. I'd buy manga more, my budget is limited but I buy pretty alot of manga already but I cannot afford to buy every single volume that there is.
Manga companies live in a world where they think everyone is a millionaire and won't care if they cancel a series just cuz they felt like it.

Agree with you there... Dark Horse dropped Shadow Star Narutaru right before it ended, those fuckers.

I doubt ero-manga will be hit hard.
I can't even think of a company that translates that stuff, though that might have something to do with my not being from America.

All of this has happened before, all of it will happen again, as they say.
No, really, every few years there's supposed "mega-crackdown" on pirates/scanslators/translators/god-knows-what and it always goes back to the starting point.
Some sites will be taken down, and will be replaced by new ones. Or they'll go deeper underground, like some VN translators are doing. And frankly, I'm surprised that it took them this long to do it.
