Disregarding the fact that that was an offhand comment, I do kind of look forward to something happening with a live action movie. I like Keanu Reeves, and like the idea he wants this to happen. No one in here has suggested any other actor more suitable for the character of Spike, but I think any one would just scream, "NO, WHY!?!?!?!?!11" with pretty much any actor.



The fact that Sunrise is going to be working so closely and hard on this means it can't be completely butchered unless they've lost their minds. It sucks the original write was shot down because of the budget, what with it being delayed and all; I'm impatient for this movie. q:

I wouldn't say I screamed "NO, WHY!?!?!?!?!11" when they announced Reeves would play Spike, it's just that he is very engraved in a certain character type right now. His past few performances have all been the same kind of gruff, static feel to them (The Day the Earth Stood Still, A Scanner Darkly, The Lake House, The Matrix etc). Granted, it worked in some of those movies, they cast the character to fit Reeve, but this time he is playing a role that we all know quite well so we have much higher expectations on how that character should act. As long as Reeve actually plays the character (as in wait for a trailer and see) I have no problem with it, it's just I keep imagining, as I'm sure many others do, he pulls a Klatu in a Spike outfit. As for your point of complaining about any actor they picked, personally, I would probably agree with you. There will never be anyone who will EXATLY fit the image of Spike we all want, that would actually require turning some dude 2D. It's the same problem with all adaptations, actors not meeting the representations of the character that would make the fans happy. There has to be a fair compromise, and while I can't think of anyone offhand, I'm sure there must be someone better suited to the role than Reeves, give the point mentioned above.



I hope your right, though the idea that there has never been a good american anime adaptation yet (purely subjective mind you, im sure others may disagree) kind of stands in the way of being too overly positive on the situation. I hope, I really do, that the first trailer hits and we can be like 'yes, awesome, totally wrong about everything we were worried about', we will see...

When an actor is cast as a certain character, I'm sure they have to meet the part half way. He did a great job fitting into the archetype in the first movie, which is why he kept getting those types of parts. I'm sure he could use a break from those parts. Look at Morgan Freeman (his voice is in your head), he's been cast as everything from "nigger" to God(Yahweh). He's not the only actor capable of such great performances across the board, and I'd like to give Reeves the benefit of the doubt. He's so lively in some of his interviews, it can't be hard transferring that energy to the silver screen; he's an actor for [deity's] sake.

He's obviously very enthusiastic about this project, and keeps pushing it forward. He loves the series and all that's come with it, I can't think of any reason as to why he'd try to bung it up. He's not exactly troll material.

He many infact be so enthusiastic since he has been offered this role that is different from all these other ones, its just when you have played the same character for some 10 years (I would even go so far as to say it started around Bram Stokers Dracula in 1992, but im sure they wernt typecasting him back then, thats just happened since the Matrix and its huge popularity) its hard to get back into the groove of doing a different type of acting. Its the same problem that Leonardo DiCaprio had after Titanic, Mark Hamill had after Star Wars, its the same one Zac Efron, Daniel Radcliff, Michael Cera & anyone from Twilight has now, all typecast to certain roles and you arnt offered anything beyond those roles (I used the DiCaprio/Hamill examples to prove you CAN break from those sterotypes). Maybe this is the project that will break the rut and we will see Reeves in a new light after it, till then we have 47 Ronin to look forward to :3

Keeanu Reeves can be a great actor and with a good script I'm sure he has the capacity to bring energy to Spike's character like we've not really seen from him before. Chio is right, he is often typecast as the quiet brooding action-hero type and it's entirely not his fault - it's just how we saw him in the Matrix. I have confidence that he would do justice to the role.

I wouldn't mind him doing the main character it's the others I'm worried about

That's gonna be a little tricky to pull off considering the number of takes it's gonna take to do that and Steve Blum will be more worn out than Keanu Reeves will be.
