English NicoNico Video

Needs more users. I'm actually pretty surprised. I figured it'd be flooded with eager users on the first day. Kinda dead so far.

The layout and design is much better than the Japanese site. Much cleaner. Of course there aren't as many features, but they do have a contract with google to allow embeding of youtube content in the niconico player - which is way fun. More stuff is on the way. Hopefully digital tickets and points in time for the Miku concert in L.A. I don't really mind using the Japanese site, but the English one is surprisingly nicer.

And it's a completely different site, unlike the German localization, the English is actually a, so far, self contained site which allows you to add videos from youtube, dailymotion, and of course nicovideo which will then be embedded into a localized player on the English site, with its own comment stream. On one hand, this is kinda an insular segmentation - keeping the English users separate from the Japanese users - and until you add it there's very little content. But on the other, I'm really hoping it'll be successful.

Maybe people are having difficulty with the cultural differences of a NicoNico style video site? The comments are anonymous, and are supposed to be mostly random "shout out" type things - not like in youtube where people actually try to have stupid discussions. There is actually a really interesting interview by Wired with Hiroyuki Nishimura (founder 2ch, nicovideo) where he talks about some of the quirks of Japanese web culture. Article Here

Edit: after discussing this at length with some IRC bros, it's important to note that this is really an English "copycat" of nicovideo.jp and not really a "localization" of the original site. Nevertheless, it's awesome.

I wouldn't have known of this if not for you, thanks might start uploading my vids to there as well to make it grow

I'd like an official english version of nico nico but I guess this is a step in the right direction.

I made an account a while ago on the Japanese version of the site after managing to Google Translate the text bit by bit, and guessing what the images said. Then I forgot my password and couldn't find the "Forgot Password" link...

Least there's an English version now so I can recover it.

I've never been able to use Nico Nico effectively. Maybe this will help. It'll be a nice break from Youtube every once in a while.
