Expanding a network in a house
0
Hi guys! It could be that this topic already existed... but I have a question and I would like some advice.
I live on the 3rd floor of a house and the modem for the internet is in the 2 floor about 30 meters or so from my room 3 walls and a door. I was told that the best way to get internet up to the room would be to get an Ethernet cable to run from the modem to a router in my room. I had another person tell me to just buy a wifi extender and set it up in my room.
What would be the best way to go?
Thanks!

Wired connections are better than WiFi but keep in mind that the cable should not be too long. Cat 5 and 6 cables are fine up to a length of 100m.
On to WiFi now. I use WiFi to connect my PC to the Internet. My modem/router is on the ground floor in my house, while my PC is in my room upstairs. I used a WiFi extender for years but i wasn't satisfied. WiFi extenders cut your bandwidth in half so, basically, i was paying for something that i wasn't using.
I thought about running cables from my modem to my PC but that wasn't really possible. Eventually, i bought another router. Signal throughput is significantly better than the previous router and now i can connect with no problems (144.4 Mbps out of 450 Mbps) and everything work fine.
So, if you can afford to use wired connection without too many problems, do it. If not, buy a more powerful router.

Thanks Johnny,
It would a 30-40 mt cable that would run up to my room and I am thinking of buying a TP-link AC1750 C7 router. I hope this solves my problem... gaming right now is close to impossible...

Seems like a pretty solid router and the cable length should be fine. If you still experience problems after the router upgrade consider contacting your provider.
Let me know if everything works good with the new setup.

why don't you have look at using powerline, it was am using.
They work by using your electric wiring to transmit data, you get 2 plug sockets with each one having a ethernet port on each plug, you connect one Ethernet cable from modern to the plug and on from PC to the other plug.
i have being using powerline for about 2 years and i have had no lose in signal and bandwidth

The problem with that is that my power network in my house has two circuits... and the would not connect :(!!

At work, I use a wifi amplifier. It seems to work fine whenever I stream videos/games.
