I agree that the side of it that has people going like "John Smith is going out later tonight lol!" for their status update is really annoying. And seeing people joining really quirky groups ("I bet this Mars bar can get more fans than Britney Spears" and shit like that) is just something that seems very pathetic. People tend to have 200+ friends and they probably actually hang out with about 10 of them IRL, if that.
That said, there is a genuinely nice side to it. Not to slyly insult anyone, but if you don't really do much in life - and neither do your friends - it is kind of pointless, I admit. But it's a convenient way for me to keep up with people I met when I was in Finland and other countries, and to see when my friends' bands are playing, or to organise parties or trips.
It's good for my Romanian friend to keep up with those he left behind in Romania. It's nice that my friend in Liverpool can go to a party and then show his friends down here in Birmingham some pictures of it, or that my friend who is now visiting various South East Asian countries can send us pics "in real time" and we can talk to him about them.
tl;dr it's great on a practical level but many people to tend to obsess over it and fall into the trap of like a GOTTA CATCH EM ALL mentality with their friends list.

Funny story about Facebook and MySpace: I joined both of them when they were pretty new, but for the completely wrong reasons.
I joined MySpace because I was chatting with this girl, and she had pictures on there. I wanted to look at them, but it said I needed to register. So, I did. Pictures weren't even that great, but over a year later, the profile came in handy when the MySpace craze started.
I joined Facebook because some Anons on 4chan were upset about a news story. A high-schooler and his friends were speeding, and they hit an old woman's car. The kid driving and the old woman were both killed, but it seemed as if all anybody cared about was the kid dying, even though the accident was his fault. The Anons didn't like this, so they waged war on the Facebook page of someone involved. I joined because I was also upset at the complete disregard of the old woman. Not sure how I feel about the whole mess now. Anyways, that was how I got started on Facebook!
I have also had to change my name on Facebook so people I went to high school with won't bug me. Everybody at my high school may know "Shaggy," but nobody knows who the hell Brodie Quint is.

I think it's more like, Anon hurts people when they can find a good reason to.

I made one a while ago, never used it, but now i rebooted it and have done nothing really with it. I don't fucking understand it or how it is "better" than myspace (stopped using that a while ago).
