ext HDD problems

Want to ask some question:
I have 2 ext HDDs here, both Western Drive. One is 1TB and another is 2TB
When I turned on the 2TB one, it simply has light on and not detected.
It's only detected if I turn on the 1 TB as well.
Now how do I fix this?

If you can feel that there are no irregular vibrations in your HDD, then it may have a problem in the USB connection. Maybe the cables are overtwisted or something.

how are your usb connections set up? are you running through a hub? Have you tried the obvious of different ports?

I know you've already provided the size and that it's Western Digital, but is there any more you can tell me so I may help?

Hmm, its model is MyBook Essential. Also, I just realized this. The problem only came up the first time I turn on my pc and turn on the hdd. After that plugging in and out is no problem. Also, I just tried plugging the 2T hdd into my friend's laptop and it works just fine.
Now Im even more confused.

My guess is that the computer only recognizes the device if it's actually physically plugged in vs. just turned on. I'm not that familiar with the USB architecture to know what's really going on.
