                        I'm on a PC
I have a My Book Essential 1TB. I had an older computer and I had put some stuff on it and that computer eventually died. On a my new computer, I've tried to access the files on the HD but every single time I try to access it, it asks if I want to reformat the HD before I can use it. And then it says cyclic redundancy error.
I really need help on this, please.

Getting a cyclic redundancy error means that the external hard-drive has corrupted data on it. It's probably a fairly large portion. The best way to recover the data on the hard drive is if you can find a program to do a deep mat scan and then transfer the files onto your internal hard-drive.

In Windows, open up My Computer and right-click the drive and select Properties. From the Tools tab click Check now... under Error-checking. Check both things and let it run. Good luck.

I don't think there is such a thing as a Deep Mat scan. What have you tried to do so far?Well, the only thing I've done so far which is still running is Nachbar's suggestion.
Edit: Oh my Nachbar. Thank you. I haven't been able to access these files for 6 months.
MOD EDIT: Don't double post.
