External PS3 HDD and Video formats

Ok, so I've been juggling hard drives for my PS3 for a few weeks now and I have a few extra hard drives (the old 160 GB it came with and some 250 GB from old computers) and I want to use them as media/backup drives. I have enclosures (USB 3, two prong) and a powered USB hub.
I have two questions.
First: The 160 GB drive that I could swear was in the PS3 is not showing up in My Computer. It appears in Devices/Printers and in my FAT32 formatting program, but it shows as unallocated and empty. I don't remember formatting it when I was done, so any idea what's going on with it?
Second: I want to confirm that I need videos converted to MP4 format for viewing on my PS3. I got SUPER C Video Converter from the Program list and I wanted to be sure it'll work for what I need. Also, I suppose that I can just put the videos on the drive, but will folders work/behave on the PS3; or do the videos need to be in a certain folder (like PS3\VIDEO)?
