facebook and college

Now I personally thought this image was funny; when I saw it i thought some of my other buddies would enjoy it as well. So, I go ahead and post it up on facebook. However, one of my recently graduated friends commented that I should NOT post stuff like this, due to the damaging effects it could have on college admissions looking at my profile. Does the fact that everything aside from my e-mail address is unviewable to anyone other than my friends mean anything? I've heard the horror stories about people getting fired due to a stupid post about how much they hate their bosses (idiots imo). But there's no possibility of backlash if I have everything set to 'friends only' right?
tl;dr? if everything is set to friends only on facebook, do i have to worry about college admissions looking at my shit

Technically you shouldn't have colleges being able to find your page due to privacy levels. However, there are some sketchy rumors that facebook allows companies to search their employees page for insubordinate or inappropriate posts. Also police have now been given the right to search peoples facebook page. My advice? Switch to Google+.

do you guys think that colleges would go to the trouble of getting through my private facebook page? I really don't have anything horrible to show (e.g. drinking at parties, doing stupid shit) maybe a couple of acrimonious comments here and there. Maybe I'm just overthinking this. But, outside of my own personal gains, I'm just genuinely curious.

Unfortunately, your profile can still be view by third parties and use the information as they see fit, regardless of what your profile is set to. After all, there is no "binding legal contract" that prevent facebook from using and distributing you information (How do you think they make money?). Colleges can (and some do) look at your face book page and decide whether or not to have you as a student. Though this is not done often. More likely, employers look at the facebook of potential employees to help them decide who would be right for a position. Though this is mainly done because on many occasions, people will often have their "true" opinions posted or in picture form.
An example; Biily, Joe, and Creel all want to be a teacher at a local high school, but their is only one position open. After the interviews, it is clear each of them have the same skills and are equally employable. The employer then looks at their facebook pages. Billy has multiple pictures of himself at a party where, in the background, their is clear underage consumption of alcohol. Joe's facebook page has the title, "Smoke Weed Er'e Day!", along with a picture of him in a group in which a joint is being passed around. Creel has an American flag behind him in his profile picture and has albums full of pictures him doing volunteer work.
Who do you think they are going to hire to work at a school?

Depends on the college and people making the call.
Good rule of thumb, if you aren't certain if the material is inappropriate for a job/college/relationship then simply don't post it. Switch off your name slightly so a search of your name doesn't turn up anything. instead of say Jason Bourne, use Jason B.. You can remove your pictures so it's not obvious who you are, limit your personal information. For sure limit the ability of ANYONE to tag you in a picture without consent.
People fired for shit on facebook or the internet are morons really.

In general, though someone you may be employed by might not be able to see it, someone THEY know may see it.
It only takes suspicions. In general and as a personal rule in this digital age, I don't post anything (anywhere... at least not anymore!) online that I'd be ashamed to confess to in a court, pretty much!
Keep it tasteful, legal and in context. Photos of "harsher" memes like the one in your post might be taken out of context by someone not in the know.
Think of all those criminals who have their backgrounds checked out by news later and people point to strange quirks as "oh no, anti-social signs blah blah up to no good". You want people on your side, not confused by your hobbies.

Maybe it's due to my paranoid and/or criminal nature, but i never felt the need to let the whole world know what i'm doing or have done.

Depends on what you count as a facebook group. Whether it's a bunch of people that have similar interests, some guy that lives in his basement living off the social lives of others, or companies that pay the douche who made facebook so that they can look at your information.

For what it's worth, there aren't any legal documents specifically binding academic institutions from gaining access to shit you post on your facebook page. Just because you want certain things to be private, the law hasn't caught up with technology. Until there's some kind of legislation restricting the access of information on social networking sites by academic institutions, you're shit out of luck. When you agree to the privacy agreements on sites like Facebook, you really need to take into account what information they are bound from sharing. When I joined Facebook, I understood the limitations of modern legislation. I don't really say shit, but if I do, I'm comfortable with the fact that being myself may impact the way I'm perceived by others and the fact that people may be able to access the shit I say to destroy me in the future.

So for example, if I make a group for video games, just a regular facebook group. I can see everybody's profiles without any problems?

No, I don't believe you are able to do so unless they have their profile set up in such a way as to allow that. Wait, are you talking about seeing their profile, or seeing their profile and infromation about them? (i.e. See their likes and dislikes, not their personal security information)

I know about the security and privacy, but can facebook groups see one's own wall, posts, video posts, wall posts from other people, their likes and other groups they are in?
Aren't companies allowed to see your profile as a whole?

I do not believe so, but I do not know all too much on that aspect. And yes, companies can view ALL of your information so long as they pay the douche who made facebook...

Well at least that is one less worry. Totally agree with you on what the douche of a creator does though.
