Fender or Gibson?

Hello, fellow FAKKU-ers. I'm a beginning guitarist, and in a few months I'll have enough money to buy an electric guitar. But I don't know which brand of electric guitar to buy: Fender or Gibson. I know there are other guitar brands out there, but some of my favorite guitarists play/have played Fenders (Kurt Cobain & Jimi Hendrix) and Gibsons (Slash & Angus Young). I can't decide on which one to buy and I was hoping some guitar players on this site could help me decide. Thanks.

And also, any recommendations on a specific brand of amplifier I should buy along with my electric guitar? Thanks.

Fender or Gibson for a beginning guitarist? nigga you crazy! but in all seriousness you don't need either, what you need is a guitar that can stay in tune, doesn't matter what brand or color or whatever. But if you or someone you know has the cash to spend then do whatever you want, I just hope it's your money and not someone elses'.

now to finally answer your question, I personally would go for a Fender, Gibsons are cool and all, but theres something about Strats and Teles' that are so beautifull to me.

Nah just joking, thing is my teacher always says that a beginning guitarist should nail the basics before moving onto better gear. I have a Classic Guitar that cost me about 120 dollars with me that I brought all the way from home to the UK, and when I'm at home I usually play my grandmother's legendary 60s Hummingbird. I don't have much experience with Elecs but I'd go with an Epiphone. Haven't chosen an amp yet though.

Thanks for your input. I already have an acoustic (George Washburn Limited) guitar (I should've stated that in my initial post). I just wanted to decide whether or not I want to move on to a Fender or a Gibson once I gain some playing experience.

I would go for something not too expensive. Unless you're a very technical player who gigs and stuff, then I suggest sticking to cheap - mid-range stuff, at least until you're ready to move on to better stuff. Also look into other brands. Ibanez, ESP/LTD, B.C. Rich, Washburn, and Aria have allot great stuff, allot of it being similar to the Fender and Gibson stuff, or at least guitar shape wise. If your heart is set on a Fender or Gibson then I suggest getting a Squier or Epiphone brand guitar, Squier owned by Fender and Epiphone owned by Gibson, both budget brands. just my two cents...

I got my fender squire affinity series strat starter kit for $600~ beautiful guitar, looks great, plays great. Only issue I'm having with it now, is that it it's intonation seems to be going out quite a lot... 12-7 seems to be off tone as apposed to 5-0 :/
But yes, it looks nice, and the addition of humbuckers makes it sound that little bit nicer on both distortion and clean. I do love my strat :D

But yeah, get something cheap, learn to play better, and upgrade. I want to upgrade to an ibanez something, or even a dean razer trivium signiture edition or a strat looking dean. something that sounds good under distortion and what not.

I have a strat so Fender for me.

For me, Fender do the best guitars. Get a Squier, it'll last you a lifetime, I still use one for distortion bust sets, fucking sweet.

If I knew better when I was getting my first guitar, it'd be a Freshman; without doubt.

Personally, get a squier strat. It'll last a while, and it's a great all around guitar. I'm sure that if you have a local music store that sells guitars, they'll let you try out different guitars and amps as long as they're used/cheap. I for one, am going to stick with esp guitars, as they're cheap and upgradeable.

Fender has some good beginner guitars, treat yourself to a Gibson when you get really good.

My first guitar was a Squire strat. It was good enough for me and I'm completely in love with the Telecaster so I guess I'd have to pick Fender.

Fender and Gibson, I feel, are overhyped due to their pedigrees and brand-name status, leading to underperformance and overpricing in comparison to other brands. You won't be able to get a good Fender until the $800 mark at LEAST, and most of the quality Stratocasters are more than $1000! I love me some Strat, but honestly that's just far too much! I haven't checked their exact prices, but if I recall correctly Gibson's even worse.

Ibanez, ESP LTD, hell even Jackson all have better deals at roughly the same quality. Hell, you could even pick up a Yamaha and have something decent at a superbudget price. Squiers are okay, but they come out of tune FAR too easily.

And this is just from looking at a few things independently and having rudimentary knowledge of guitar playing. Is it okay for a drummer to know this much about axes?

Funny... I picked up a fender strat for $600 which has humbuckers... and came with: amp, headphones, tuner, leads and strings... so guitar probably was like $480~
It being a squier doesn't change anything... same brand, same company, different location of build iirc.
Also, ibanez, esp ltd and jacksons good guitars are all well in the thousands (aside from their cheap entry level stuff)... the hell are you getting your sources from?

I think it really comes down to what type of music he is trying to play.

My lead guitarist goes through long lists of these sorts of things.

But the Mushroomhead fan is right, it comes down to the style of music he plays.

I wouldn't say it's a huge factor to consider... Unless you mean look wise. I play metal on my strat ezpz. It sounds pretty nice under distortion imo.

I think strats can be pretty metal.
