Formula 1

After a quick search I could not find a proper topic.
So anyone around here follows Formula 1?
I know in the US people don't care much for it but around the world it is pretty popular.
It's the only automotive sport that I follow. All others I have no interest to be honest.
Right now the Korean Grand Prix has just started.
This year was much more exciting than the previous ones. With only 4 races left we have an extremely close competition between Vettel and Alonso. The more they change the rules to make it a skill competition rather than an engineering competition the more I like it.
Personally I root for alonso, even though he is a major douchebag.

but anyway, I created that one 2 years ago, so fuck it. I'm just glad there's finally someone else here who appreciates real motorsports.
That being said, I've been supporting Vettel and Red Bull since 2010, haven't looked back since. Definitely stoked he won today's Korean GP, 2 years in a row baby.
And of course, taking over as championship leader, hells to the yeah.

I saw that one, but it looked to be specifically about the 2010 season which is now two years behind. I looked for one that wasn't tied down to a single season. I guess I have a slight OCD.
Vettel is a very talented driver, there is no denying it. But I think he is heavily favored for being in what is clearly the best team in the past 3 seasons. They started slow in 2012 but have been the only team at the top for the whole season now. McLaren is a mess, Ferrari still has problems in the pit and strategising, not to mention their constant problems with the tires, Mercedes and Lotus have had their ups and downs. For the past three years you can safely say Red Bull has had the best cars. I'm not taking anything away from Vettel, he does out-perform Weber, which I believe to be a great driver as well, almost every race. But to me ever since the Prost/Senna days no one has gotten so much out of a bad car as Alonso has.
Having said that, my favorite driver is Kubica. It was a tragedy he got into that accident. I just hope he can come back to Formula 1 and perform like he used to.

I agree with you, to be honest. I guess it's probably coz of the genius that is Adrian Newey. He's been designing championship winning cars for a while now, so I think he's the one Red Bull has to thank. But of course, Vettel is bloody quick. I don't know how he does it, but he always pulls out some magic whenever he's in a car.
McLaren aren't really a mess, it's probably coz the Button/Hamilton partnership isn't working out. But we'll find out next year after Lewis goes to Merc. Speaking of which, I can't wait to see Sergio Perez in a McLaren. The kid's got serious talent, in a sub-par Sauber, still able to get on the podium. Ferrari's problem is that they have to stop prioritising one driver over the other, etc. Alonso > Massa. Alonso has the skill and talent for sure though. Red Bull had the same prob in 2010, esp when Vettel and Webber crashed into each other. Lotus, I hope Kubica will return to take over Grosjean. Would be interesting to see how he works with Raikkonen.

Well the Button/Hamilton partnership was working just fine in it's first two seasons. Not to mention Button is probably the guy I like the most as far as personality goes in F1. He is a likeable and nice guy. To me the biggest problem is the team not knowing how to deal with Hamilton's immaturity. Hence his move imo.
Perez is an extremely talented guy. In the beginning of the year the rumor mill said that he was going to Ferrari, so I was surprised when McLaren got him. I never expected, despite his flaws, that McLaren would not keep Hamilton. With the lack of performance by Massa ever since his accident I honestly did not expect him to stay in Ferrari, and there are news arising that they are working on a renewal right now.
Raikkonen and Kubica would be a great duo for Lotus, but it's still uncertain if Kubica can get back to his old form.
Another driver I like is Kobayashi. He is not special, but he is very solid and could be a great second driver for a good team. He is relentless, can hold his position against better cars and does not commit a lot of mistakes. I'm not sure if it's official or not but I've heard he will be teamless next year if not for some sponsors. It's a shame imo that Petrov gets to stay because he has money but Kobayashi, who's more talented imo, has to leave because he has none.
As a last piece of venting I have to say I hope Schumacher retires for real this time. I mean it's starting to become a Brett Favre situation here, and we all know how annoying that is.

Look out tomorrow, for the defending world driver champ will once again successfully defend his throne, and claim his 3rd championship.
In other words, VETTEL'S ON POLE, IF ALONSO GETS ANOTHER dnf, THE TITLE IS AS GOOD AS OURS.

Now things will be interesting. RBR decided to make changes after the penalty so they are starting from the pit lane and Alonso was bumped one spot to the 5th.
Post-race edit:
It was a very entertaining race, which is unusual for this track. Vettel had an amazing race. Even though he was lucky to have two safety cars happen he did his job superbly. Having said that Button could have defended his position a little bit better. I know his mindset is to give up the position rather than retire from the race, but if it were one of the younger more reckless drivers Vettel might have not finished that race.
I'm truly happy Raikkonen won it. He is a great driver, an interesting personality and honestly seeing a car with Lotus written on it win a race is extremely nostalgic.
I think it would be best for the season if Alonso had won, but 10 points behind Vettel is not an abysmal distance. The end of the race was thrilling. Seeing Alonso close in to Raikkonen and Vettel overtake Button had my heart pumping. If the driver's championship gets decided on the last race of the year would be very fun. Interlagos is one of the most classic tracks there are and both drivers fighting for the first place are incredibly talented.

Well, everything will be settled tomorrow. Vettel just has to finish 4th or higher than Alonso to win, right now after quali Vettel's starting 4th, Alonso 8th. Looks promising, fingers crossed.

Ah, really? That Sauber was arguably better than the Platypus-Box they called Ferrari(I tend to believe people think that the team is some "Ferrari #2" and too small to threat the big teams). Heck, Alonso was going to post on twitter that the Rear configuration/design was un-changed since May, and that was before the Indian GP late in the year!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/formulaone/article-2225300/Fernando-Alonso-rage-Ferrari-chief-suggests-Spaniard-fault-India.html
I want my 1.2 million followers to know that the key aerodynamic components at the rear of the Ferrari are still the same as they were in May
Alonso might have been able to perform better at some tracks if he had the Sauber. This might sound strange, but the Sauber was actually very good, especially on tracks with fast corners. Not to forget the drivers were able to do longer stints with the tyres if they were able to go easy on them.
Sadly, Pérez lost it towards the end, he tried too hard to give the team good results. He said he wanted to give the team a win, which actually backfired at him. It could have happened at Malaysia, but he made a mistake too much there. Let's see in which direction it goes at McLaren.
Btw: I rate Alonso as the best driver in the field. Yeah, Vettel is a good driver(and I am not that much of an Alonso fan), but if we'd take his shiny toy Bull away and gave him a Ferrari aswell, would he still manage to go faster than Fernando?
I am a fan of Nick Heidfeld, a nobody. But that's partly why I like him. Doesn't need to be a superstar like Hamilton or cool like Räikkönen. Down to earth, he's got more than he was given(Thanks to Mika Häkkinen, he was ditched in favour of Kimi Räikkönen at McLaren as he was a Mercedes Junior). In the meantime, Kubica, Kovalainen and Rosberg won, he'd deserve a victory too... Sadly, he probably won't get another chance.
So, the grid is looking like this right now for 2013:
Red Bull: Vettel/Webber
Ferrari: Alonso/Massa
McLaren: Button/Pérez
Lotus: Räikkönen/Grosjean(Stop crashing please!)
Mercedes: Rosberg/Hamilton(IMO wrong move mate)
Sauber: Hülkenberg(That guy is gold)/GutÃerrez
Force India: Di Resta/TBA
Williams: Maldonado/Bottas(Thiy guy finally gets what he deserves)
Toro Rosso: Ricciardo/Vergne
Caterham: Pic/TBA
Marussia: Glock/Chilton
Did I forget anything? Oh yes, HRT finally died. Vettel will probably not miss them, now that "Cucumber" is out of a drive and can't make him crash or block him.
Now, can't wait for the new season...
Oh btw: Before you ask me, I've been following F1 since about 1998.
