Get a new isp or fix the problem myself?

Ok. I am getting sick and and tried of my isp. I have been having disconnecting problems. So I had them give me a new modem since they said that would fix the problem( They said it was my old modem since Ive had it since 2006 or 2005). So that didn't fix my problem. I kept calling them and calling them and still they could not figure out anything. Then they said if I got one of their modems that they would be able to troubleshoot it better since it was one of theirs(it was a 2wire modem.). They told me that since I had gotten that other modem from them and it didn't solve the problem then I could send it back and get what I had payed on it deducted off my bill since I was going to have to pay for the 2wire per month. Well they are now saying whoever said that lied and that I can't send it back since its used. So now I'm paying for 2 modems and now my internet is acting crazy. It is 0.41 mbps for the download speed on min. Then 1.56 the next. The highest its been is 7.74 mbps. Someone help me before I lose my mind. Also if something is common sense to you, its most likely isn't for me since lack of knowledge about internet speeds and connections and modems, etc. Thanks in advance.

Also, they basically made a fraudulent claim, I would call up the company and find out who was talking to you and get them fired, you could also bring the company to court, but the fees aren't really worth it.

Hmm....I'm going to wait a few days and see what kind of responses I get. Oh its getting worse. Ever since they started to check it or whatever now its gotten SLOWER. 0.15 mbps
Oh yea forgot to mention this IS the fastest connection they offer even though they say something is wrong. They say they don't want to send anybody out there because of a service charge. They saying it might be my filters. It might be my 50 foot phone wire( they say that might be it but I call bs. It was working just fine before now its not.)
Is verizon a good isp?

Well Verizon is a huge company so I would assume they would be able to supply you with good service. I've heard good things about their FIOS service and you should try to get that if its available in your area.

From what I read verizon seems to be against P2P so if you do use things like torrents and such you might get your account terminated or sent a letter about it.
I recommend seeing if you can get it from dslextreme.com. Also the General Manager a replies and helps users on dslreports.com. I use them and from what seen the prices seems to be cheaper as well and you don't have to use them for phone line as well...unless you are already.

Verizon actually get's good ratings from Consumer Reports User surveys but I have a question. Is it FIOS or DSL? I would demand that they come and check their line to the house and replace if necessary. A bad cable will cause untold amounts of problems if its a) unshielded or b) Has a broken internal wire. You can dispute the charge if they installed your internal wiring, if they didn't then I'm sorry but you need to pony up to have the connection from your PC to the external point replaced. Also this 50 foot phone wire is it flat phone wire? You need to be using a twisted two pair wire if you want reliable data transfer.

Depends on the fine print mate.
Some ISPs don't specify a minimum speed with their service therefore any legal ground you have is shaky at best.
OP run standard diagnostics ect ect.
Also make sure it isn't dodgy wiring in your home or like Masterwolf mentioned bad external wiring.
OP remember that some ISPs actually throttle torrent speeds and other p2p activity, this should be mentioned in the fine print.

And the phone wire is flat i guess. But its been working just fine before. And how do i run a standard test? Oh and I have At&t as my isp
Ok after threatening to switch isp they sent someone out. He said he think that my phone wire might be damaged and to switch to a new one. If that doesnt work move my computer and modem closer to the phone jack. Well before all this happened it worked before just fine. But now suddenly it goes crazy. Idk doesnt match up imo. so im trying the new one that I already had the highest its been so far is 4.65 mbps and the lowest 0.68 mbps.
This is what it is so far.

They lied to me again >.>. They said it was the phone wire. Fucking liers.
