Shame on all of you! Not even one of you guys suggested these following bands. They basically helped defined what we know as metal today.
- Led Zeppelin
- Black Sabbath
- Deep Purple
- Judas Priest
- Motley Crue.
Others i like atm.
- Motorhead
- Rob Zombie/ White Zombie
- Archenemy
- Lamb of God - They are very good, try them. They arn't too bad with their religious messages either.
- Slipknot
- Korn - fav metal band atm.
Sorry, I only list bands I like, and I don't consider Led Zepellin heavy metal. It may be metal, but it's nothing like the stuff today, which is what Azu's trying to get into.
He can listen to it anyway thoug.

They very much were heavy metal back in the 70's, and I should have thought about it, but I assumed he meant a more modern definition of metal.
Anyway, I wouldn't start him off on Lamb of God as the quote says above, if I recall he wanted some clean vocals in there, and I've never heard anything beyond the growls/screaming that Blythe has on there. Same reason I didn't suggest Devildriver.
Another I'd recommend that I forgot the first time would be Sybreed. Industrial/Melodic Death Metal if I had to guess, constantly switches between clean vocals and screams, and the lyrics are always good, usually in the form of a concept album. Any of their albums would do, but their newest is also their best I think, so I'd say to look that up first. The Pulse of Awakening is the name. Don't judge them until you've sampled a few different songs, as they bounce around to damn near everything, from real slow light sounding songs, to some of the heaviest stuff you'll hear.
I would suggest Woe of Tyrants, but it's constant growls, and there are religious lyrics in there sometimes (As in pro-religon, if that makes a difference). And despite my beliefs on the matter, the music is amazing so I get over the religious tie-ins and enjoy it, cause they sound damn good.

Sybreed is a good one. Wouldn't call it Melodic Death metal though. I'd say Pulse of Awakening is their best to date and a good song to to start off with would be 'Electronegative'. It gives you a pretty good idea of their overall sound.
If you've tried Dream Theater, ideally SFAM (Most solid album by far), you could consider checking out Seventh Wonder as well. Their most recent (concept) album 'Mercy Falls' is quite a masterpiece. And you should like (or worship) it as well since you stated Progressive Metal as a possible new favorite genre of yours.

Also,I forgot to put this into the last post..
I dont know how much more of Ziltoid you've listened to, but N9 is the song directly after Hyperdrive. It's heavier but still keeps the clean vocals.
If you want to start listening to the heavier songs with harsher vocals, listen to By Your Command, Color Your World. They both have a mix of death and clean.
Also, The Greys... well that song is just plain awesome. No growls in it, but heavy and slow. Solar Winds is just an epic song (dont mind the words at the beginning )
N9
By Your Command
Color Your World
The Greys
Solar Winds
If you want to hear the entire album in order, go to this playlist I made on YT...
Though, two parts (Omnidimensional Creator and Tall Latte) are not on Youtube
Ziltoid the Omniscient
And since you said you like Devin's softer music, I'll mention that Devin Townsend is currently in a 4 album project. Supposedly, the music will get heavier with each album release. He just recently released his second album out of it, and it has a re-recording of Hyperdrive on it, except this time it's sung by Anneke van Giersbergen and not Devin, along with a lot of the songs on the album.
I still prefer Ziltoid over these albums by far (ZTO is much heavier), but here are two YT playlists I made featuring all the songs, except for #7 on Ki (Ain't Never Gonna Win...), which is nowhere to be found on Youtube.
This is experimental music so you'll pretty much have to listen to it all in one sitting the first time. Ki is not metal at all (but has a few small, heavy sections). Addicted starts off heavy and gets lighter. The 3rd and 4th album are supposed to be very heavy.
Ki - Devin Townsend
Addicted! - Devin Townsend
Check out some of his earlier albums, too, if you haven't already.
One good example.... Mountain, from Terria.

WELL U NAW NIGS, THERS A FKIN REASON WHY THERE IS NO METAL ON TH33 RADIO. IT SUKS LOL
But seriously, ^trying to hard. Perhaps picking MCR would've been a more believable choice.
-----
Having said that I'd recommend the OP to check out Ayreon, which is from my home country. Their sound incorporates folk, classical and electronica.
It's a Rock Opera so with a lot of singers. Their album 'The Human Equation' includes James LaBrie, Mikael Åkerfeldt Eric Clayton, Devin Townsend and a few other. I myself have only checked out their most recent album '01011001' and has Jonas Renkse(!), Jørn Lande, Simone Simons etc. (Check wiki for full list).
Every album is is a concept which tells a science-fiction story in about 1 hour and 40 min.
^ Jonas @ 4:58, my favorite part for a reason!
I'd say it's extremely good shit if you're into this stuff. I'm checking out The Human Equation today, since it took me about half a year to dig the entire 01011001 album.

I'll have to check that out.
Thanks for posting that :D

Man, the music gods really don't want me to listen to new stuff. Every time I'm planning to listen and rate all of you guys suggestions, something always happens. Like for example, my grandma is currently staying at my house for Christmas. Normally I wouldn't complain about that, but for some reason my mom decided that my grandma is going to stay in my room for the next two weeks. Now I'm completely screwed because my PC is in my room and I don't hate my college laptop anymore. That means no music downloading or youtube for me for two weeks.
:(
... rant over. Man, I comment you for reading all of that.

I already listen to all of those. Zeppelin, Sabbath, Crue and Motorhead are some of my favorite bands. My dad got me into those because that's what he use to listen when he was a teenager. He still has all of his old Zeppelin vinyl records. It's too bad no one in my family is allowed to go near them. They're to valuable to him.

Wakes up at midday, goes to bed at 9. She has completely taken over my room. My computer desk is now a dresser.
Also, using console browsers is annoying. When the hell are they gonna get a good tab function?

Manowar is just such an hilarious band, excellent self-esteem driven band. Don't forget to always have a 'Warriors Shield' on you when you're out.

But in all seriousness, why the hell sing 'about' how you are playing metal to become homies with the gods of metal and thus, giving you superuber metal powers in order to kill all the evil forces with METHAL.

Well, to start listing; Opeth, Dream Theater, Swallow The Sun, Amon Amarth, All that Remains, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Epica, Edguy, Avantasia, Whitin Temptation, Leave's Eyes, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Dissection, Nifelheim, Satyricon, Slayer, In Flames.
Most has been mentioned, but I think I managed to contribute with some new bands.

This thread turned into something pretty cool. We should just sticky the whole damn thing, and if someone makes yet another 'metal' thread, just direct them over here. As we've had quite a few people put up a hell of a lot of good bands.

Another few bands, Ghost Brigade's 'Isolation Songs' are pretty accessible as every song has a lot of melody to it and his so-called 'grunts' are entry level, so don't be afraid of those because they often get shifted with cleans on most tracks. A bit of a Cult of Luna/Katatonia mix.
My favorite track on the album:
Also, which I already recommended in the other recommendation thread, Cynic. It's a technical but easy-to-dig band if you give it a few spins (and the spacey-vocals aren't irritating you, which I could imagine). It gets labeled as Technical Death Metal but their recent album, 'Traced in Air', is mostly just Progressive Metal with some Jazz/Fusion.
Another good underground band, Kiuas. They mix Power/Death/Black/Folk/you-name-it metal in their debut and second release . Although their more recent work is a bit safer and just Heavy/Power Metal. For now I recommend their debut because it's, for me at least, their best work till now.
Although I have to say, by dismissing scream/grunt vocals, you miss out on good stuff. Better get used to it sooner or later.

Another band I just remembered about, Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They're progressive mtal, progressive rock, symphonic metal, and clasical, all mixed into one hell of a band. There's 14 vocalists, 14 musicians, and 2 narrators (what?).
The entire strings section of band is completely made up of local musicians.
It may not be what you're looking for though.
