if u bought an acoustic guitar try an easy song 1st such as sum41 - pieces (acoustic version)(pretty easy) if it is an electric guitar u can try a various type of songs that are using power chords such as blink 182 or even Green Day ( browse the chord at the internet u can find em at 911Tabs.com or Ultimate-Guitar.com or just simply download a guitar pro application (hope you enjoy playing your brand new guitar :D)Thxs ill visit those site for my acoustic ^^. And I am enjoying it even tho it hurts to place my fingers on the strings
Yeah I got a pick so only my left fingers hurt from the strings

I've played guitar for 3-4 years , and I self-taught myself. If you're playing the acoustic guitar you should start by listening to some pop songs, then play the notes of the vocalist(not the guitar) and then try to play it with the chords that match the notes(memorize the chord diagram first)
You'll soon learn the chord progression, I suggest try singing with it to improve the abilty to sense tempo and harmonization.
And yeah, the most important part is training your ear, listen to good songs often.
