Anime cons are one of the best places to get figures, on the last day of a con, close to closing some dealers will give discounts on them rather than take them back.
Also most of us get one at a time only and just build our collection slowly.

As for how much I've paid for figures, most of what I own is in the $50-60 range, while the most expensive figure I've bought was $200 which I gifted to my fiance. I've worked various retail jobs over the years so that's how I afford it, and I'm extremely picky with what I purchase. Occasionally, I receive figures as gifts, or as payment for cosplay commissions.

I usually buy 2 or 3 every quarter. It's a very expensive hobby that I do enjoy quite so, but I do work a full time job as well as going to school, so it's hard to keep up with this hobby, especially when college is expensive nowadays.

The wonderful thing about having a Job is that you get to make money, the wonderful thing about a bank account is you have a place to store your money, and finally the wonderful thing about budgeting is that you have money leftover to save
Although I don't buy figures, I buy $130 pieces of cardstock...and I need 4 of them
Course only going to community college tends to help, that and shopping around, course I dunno how well that works for figures.

Ebay has helped me find some rare hard to locate figures and also from time to time allowed me to get amazing crazy deals like Freeing's 1/4 Haruhi bunny girls for $50 a piece! Patience is necessary as is knowing who to buy from, there are tons of knock-offs out there and caution is always needed when the price is too good to be true.

Tbh figurine collecting isn't as bad as photography the want of gear is endless and expensive.
I get all my stuff from Hobby Search, the good stuff averages around 100~200.

Yeah, I'm gonna go with working. I make a decent-enough salary to be able to afford extravagances. I also sell things occasionally on eBay and the Amazon Marketplace, and basically do a lot of little things on a very short contract basis that add up quickly.
That, and I really don't spend a lot of money. I don't watch TV at all, so I don't own a cable box because there's just nothing I want to watch. But since I'm an Amazon Prime member, they have tons of stuff, most of which is free, that I can watch any time I feel like it on my Playstation 3, which are now absurdly inexpensive for full-fledged multimedia machines.
Add that to just being knowledgeable about how to save on energy costs and knowing what is and is not worth investing in, it all just adds up to a positive amount at the end of every two weeks.

Reserving new figures usually gives you a discount at least on the sites I use, so this helps.
I do not buy a lot of figures probably around 1-4 a year as a max. Depends if I find one that is excellently made, I learned not to rush buying a figure just cause its of a char I like. Usually pays off to wait until its a char you like AND is well made and possibly even cheap.

If you conserve money, you'll be able to afford at least 1 master grade gundam models every other month. And that's if you conserve $1 per day.

I almost never go to ebay to buy figures anymore, unless it's a rare out of print one where the seller is from Japan or US (my Winter Uniform Konata for example). Normally it is around the $50 range (though I'm willing to go up to $70 but that is my limit) and I only buy them at cons. The most I've ever paid for one was $150 which was my Index figure from To Aru Majutsu no Index and that was because I just got my refund check that day and decided to have a bit fun with it.

It's not like I have a bunch of cash to offload into this hobby, but I do work alongside school; by saving up over an extended period of time, I can usually afford to buy one every month (not that I do).

Basing from what you guys have said. (Still being in school/collage and still have a fulltime/partime job)
What kind of jobs do you have?
I'm in collage and want to start working also to fund this new hobby of mine. So far the only job I would have loved to work for doesn't accept part time employees (A sales clerk for this local video game shop)

First of all, I only buy the figures of my favorite characters, not the whole series where they belong and if it looks good. I also do not buy any statue or figure above $200 (tax included).
The place that I buy them is also the same place where I usually play Magic, which is owned by my friend that gives my a %20 discount on everything that I buy so I kinda save a bit. I also just have to point out what I want and after exactly 2 weeks, they somehow manage to obtain it.
I go to a university and have a few part time jobs which... hmm, pays well?
Most importantly, most of my friends and relatives give me figures or statues as gifts for special occasions.

I work full time and when the mood strikes me, I go and buy one.
There's a store around here in Little Tokyo that I go to buy my figures now, it's called Anime Jungle.
Most of the figures there around usually between $20-30, pretty reasonable, while some are way up there ranging from $100-300.
Today I just bought a SQ Mugi from them for $32.69 (after tax).

Hmm, it looks adorable. Do you have the whole club?
