I wanna start reading comics...

Which ones are recommended?

I'm really interested in Batman,since I remember watching the series as a kid.
The X-men looks great,too.

The Killing Joke (duh)
Batgirl: Year One (most awesome comic ever)
Robin: Year One
Teen Titans: Year One

Don't know much about X-men comics.

Do I need to read this in any chronological order or anything?
Or are they stand-alones?

I've never read comics, except manga, so I'm not sure of the procedure.

You'll probably be able to get the story with just the minimal knowledge of continuity. Nightwing was the first Robin, Jason Todd's the second Robin who was killed by the Joker, that kind of stuff.

Ah,so I can go ahead and read these without any problems then?
Do they ever reference each other or anything of that nature?

Well, Batgirl: Year One has a lot of references to Barbara Gordon's future identity as Oracle but I think that's about it.

I think that was a spoiler,but I'd find out about it anyway,right?

if you read ultimate x men be sure to find the one with ultimate proteus. cant recall exactly which it is. Its in the world tour anthology.

Of course the Scott Pilgrim comics are a given.

Also, Marvel Civil War but you'd have to look into more continuity.

I've downloaded many of the comics that you've all recommended and I want to thank you all for the suggestions. I have a problem though.

I want to read the JLA: Identity Crisis, JLA: Crisis of Conscience, and Infinite Crisis. But there are so many tie ins that I'm getting confused. What is the correct order to read all of these Crisis books and what are the must read tie-in books?
