Is Blue Destiny Unit 1 a GM or Gundam?
0
Is Blue Destiny Unit 1 considered a GM or a Gundam? And this topic if for Unit 1 ONLY. I want to know if it is or not and why. I don't want to hear "Oh the skirt looks the same as the Gundam Ground so therefore it is a Gundam."
My take. BD1 is a GM because simply of the head it has. It's a GM's head, not a Gundam. Plain and simple. If Unit 1 was a Gundam, why doesn't it have a Gundam head? Or at least a Gundam face?

It's a GM, hence its code name: GM Blue Destiny Unit 1; source
For me, this along the fact it uses GM head instead of Gundam head already enough proof that it was considered as GM class not Gundam Class.

BD unit 1 with EXAM system = incredible performance and extremely unstable + time limit.
Gundam with magnet-coating = high response and stable + no time limit.
I don't like gamble to win. So i choose gundam.

It's a GM. From my guess, the reason why a GM was used to test out the EXAM System was because it was cheaper to modify, instead of building a whole new mobile suit.
So yes, in simple terms, it's a ground-based GM.

RX-79 GM. Blue Destiny Unit 1
look at the name it's using RX-79 same like Ground Gundam
based on the core it's a Ground Gundam only the head is GM since this is a test unit.
it's a Gundam WITH GM head.
the armaments same like BD 2 and 3 except those two are using Beam Rifles. you can say this is an entirely different MS. it's not a GM since the armaments and design are too far for being a GM itself. it's kinda complicated whether this is a Gundam or GM. but based by the armaments, design, the name, and also the core which is similiar to Ground Gundam, it's a Gundam with GM head, not a Ground GM.

After much consideration, I believe Unit 1 is a Gundam. It came to me after watching an episode of the 08th MS Team, when Karen had the head blown off of her RX-79[G] by an Acguy. In the next episode, her decapitated Gundam had a fresh new GM head. The replacement head didn't really change her Gundam's performance, and after researching the Blue Destiny Unit 1, I realized it was the same mobile suit with a different paint job. So unless you think the head section is the critical determining factor for distinguishing Gundams from other mobile suits, Unit 1 is most definitely a Gundam.

The difference between BD1 and the Ground Gundam GM Head is that the GM Head was just using a GM head as a replacement for the destroyed Gundam head because the Ground Gundams had no spare parts because they were spare parts themselves from the RX-78-2. However the Blue Destiny is a COMPLETELY different unit. And it was built as a GM, not a Gundam.

Because this will make confusion which is gundam and which is GM. This case will be same between Hazel-GM Quel.

In a nut shell, if a mobile suit was built with a Gundam head from the very beginning, it's called a Gundam. If a mobile suit was built with a GM head from the beginning, then it's a GM. Plain and simple.

Actually, all three Blue Destiny units had the exact same frame as the RX-79[G]. Not only that, the BD units each had an RX prefix in their model numbers, which is as Gundam as it gets. Unit 1 used a GM head, but that doesn't change the fact that it was actually developed from an existing RX-79[G] Gundam. The only things that makes Unit 1 different from the RX-79[G] is the GM head, and the EXAM system. Consider this, in Gundam ZZ, the Zeta Gundam had its head blown off and replaced temporarily with a Zaku head. Did the Zeta become a Zaku? Of course not, and it would still be the Zeta if its head was replaced with a GM head. The same principle applies to the Blue Destiny Unit 1. All three units were originally rolled-out as Ground Gundams, and were later modified into BD units. This means that Unit 1 was originally manufactured with a Gundam head. In other words, Unit 1 is a Gundam with a GM head.

Please don't use the RX model number naming for proof, since that didn't happen with Guntank and Guncannon. >_>
Yes, the BD-1 is made Based On a Gundam[G], but are you sure that they did Really intend to make it as a Gundam?
Don't you think that there's a possibility that they made GM to "look like a Gundam"?
Because if you really believed that Based ON = The same, then I can say that the GM Custom = Gundam Alex, because the production was Based On Gundam Alex
Point is:
Don't look at the physical appearances, but more into "the paperwork" for it.
analogy: I made a car that looks like a Ferrari 360, but I named it a Lamborghini Murciélago.
"see the point?" it's still Lamborghini even though it looks like a Ferrari 360
SO, Physical Appearance doesn't matter one bit
Too bad the BD-1 didn't appear in in Gundam Vs Gundam NExt, since their is a Pilot skills that can only activate if the MS is a gundam. This will surely be easy too confirm.

The RX in the serial number doesn't mean a thing. The Guncannon and the Guntank both have RX in their serial numbers but they aren't Gundams. And for the Zeta Zaku, the Zaku's head was ONLY used as a temporary head because the Argama didn't have another Zeta head to replace the destroyed one and they needed the Zeta to help Judau. BD-1 was built as a GM while BD-2 and BD-3 were built as Gundams. Who cares if all 3 units were equipped with the EXAM, it doesn't mean anything. BD-1 had the GM head when it was first build so therefore it's a GM because it never had a Gundam head in the first place.

OK. I'll concede to the point about the RX prefix, but my main point is in how the Blue Destiny units were produced. Each BD Unit was produced by modifying an existing RX-79[G] Ground Gundam. That means that at some point in time, Unit 1 was a Ground Gundam just like the ones in the 08th MS Team, and later modified into the unit that it would ultimately be. The Blue Destiny Units were not based on Ground Gundams, they WERE Ground Gundams. So then how could Unit 1 not be a Gundam? It was rolled out as a Gundam and then it was later modified with the EXAM system and had its head replaced with a GM head. There are no indications whatsoever that Unit 1 didn't have the same Gundam frame that it was rolled-out with, and the only difference was its GM head. So my Zeta Zaku point (which I did note as a temporary fix, by the way) still stands.

The Zeta Zaku point is useless. If you're gonna say that the BDs are Gundams just because they were built using the Ground Gundam's design, does that make the GM Grounds Gundams too? They have similar bodies to the Ground Gundam so does that make it a Gundam? No. GM Grounds are GMs. And from what Kaimax said, does that make the GM Custom the Gundam Alex then? They both look similar so does that make the GM Custom a Gundam? No. The GM Grounds and GM Custom were built as GMs and so was BD-1. You have no proof that BD-1 was ever a Gundam to begin with. Sure it may feature a similar design to the Ground type but this design is shared with the GM Ground types as well but they aren't called Gundams at all. Your stance will lead to all of the Ground types to be called Gundams when they're not. Gundams that use different head like the Zeta Zaku and the "GM Head" are only so because they have no extra heads and are using whatever was around as a replacement. So for these two ONLY, yes they are Gundams but for everything else, no they were either built as Gundams in the beginning or as GMs.

Well this is embarrassing...
I hate to admit it, but I am totally wrong this time. I found out through careful research that the BD units were indeed original units, and that would make Unit 1 a GM. So then Mr. Bushido, the next time you make another interesting topic, I'll try not to make an ass out of myself.

The way I see it, you're not really making an ass of yourself. I can believe that you honestly thought BD-1 was a Gundam so it's natural for you to give supporting facts why it is even though they proved otherwise. For discussions like this, you'd have to research more. And that's pretty much it.

what does GM mean?I have no official sources to confirm it, but GM may be an acronym for Gundam Mass production type. Though the name may actually be believable, I have no material to confirm this with and this is the best answer I can give you. It would be quite interesting to find two or more credible sources to confirm the name and I'll certainly look into it.
