Is Hentai really that taboo to people?

To keep a long story short, I told a girl in confidence who I've known for a good four years now (who I only know online) that I come on Fakku for the forums and occasional read of the doujins, basically telling her the outlines of what the site's about. Her reaction? She pretty much acted as if I'd commited murder.

Which brings me to the title; Is Hentai really that taboo to people? I just don't get why.

To the general population? Mostly, yes.

To otakus? No.

It is to your average Joe, but (from what I've seen) it seems to be getting closer to become more accepted and dare I say it, "mainstream". I mean think about it, a lot more people are into hentai now than say, 10 or even 5 years ago. I would like to stress that this is just from what I've personally noticed. I still wouldn't run out the door and tell all my neighbors and their dog how much I love hentai (I know that's extreme, but I'm sure you get the point).

On topic: People are into hentai, they just save their faces from others and hides it, especially when they believe that hentai (cartoon porn for them) are for kids. At least that's how it is here... kinda.

I think everyone should just enjoy what makes them happy, I love anime and would almost kill to become an anime character... I suppose i would look a bit weird being the only animated fellow in the world, But I would be awesome!!!

Anyhow, i think its normal to enjoy hentai. Its just porn without imperfections, its basically porn about your perfect dream spouse, because you can animate someone to look exactly as you want. In a way its perfect porn XD

And most of the story lines are interesting and add some entertainment to the porn, so its not simply fap fap fap done. Its ohh.. my i hope she gets the guy she wants.... aww... that so sweet of him....fap fap fap fap.... next episode.

The general tasteless assortment of hentai shown in porn ads and porn websites generally alienate most people if not discourage or give the wrong image of our culture once again. I have grown to learn however that after explanation to others as to why I enjoy hentai and why its less of a pornographic material and more of an art,albeit a slightly erotic one, it becomes less of a taboo than other fetishes and accepted if not atleast giving the person a neutral uncaring discomposure

Really shouldn't see people panic over this as an adult. When I was a kid, sure I can see people freaking out about it. Nowadays it'd be more disgust over the cartoon aspect.

Its because hentai is perverse an adult stuff. But there shouldnt be anything wrong ,if you're mature enough, with reading an looking into sexual things from time to time. Its only human. Some people prefer to look away from it. Or it just might be weird to them since they dont understand it. Like the whole "How come you get off on cartoons?" debate. When it deals with a individuals personal decision you should respect that and not throw those things your into in there face. Unless the person is interested.

Hentai, porn, anything related to sex, really. It shouldn't be, but that's how people are.

All I care about is the story and meaning behind hentai, not the sexual content..
People just categorize things when it's not common and accepted as a whole.

Most people see hentai as bad because "dude it's not even real, how can you get off to that", isn't porn just pixels on a screen, just saying.

I do indeed prefer anime over big name television series.
I enjoy reading. I prefer a book over watching television.

I prefer visual novels over video games.

I definitely agree with you on the first thing, on occasions I will prefer a book, it gives you a different view that TV can't and the other way around, on the last thing, VNs are totally different from video games, while I do like quite a few VNs, I think some of them could have just been light novels.

Well, yeah. People don't get it. It isn't real, they have weird eyes, it fetishises children, tentacles are involved...people only need to hear the extremes or see it at a glance to form an opinion. If you took the time to explain how it can develop story and characters to make a more emotional experience, rather than a purely visceral one, you might change a few minds, but you'd probably also ruin a few friendships. It may be slightly different in the US.

My old friends knew or guessed and laughed about it a bit, but they didn't treat me any differently. That was after some 7 years of slow revelation though. I wouldn't dare broach the subject with people at university, not even the few anime fans. It's difficult to grasp how you could like drawings in that way and I can see why.

Let's be honest, all of us are perverts in our own way. If you tell someone that you're into hentai, sure they'll give you a disgusted look or rebuke you for liking it, but deep down, they like perverted things as well. It may not be hentai, but it’s something perverted. Integrity prevents us from being honest about our fappable hobbies.

i think it depends on the person and people around since i read and watch hentai in the living room w/o headphone in front of my parents they don't care along as my sister don't see it but the thing is my sister is the one downloading the hentai in my laptop
