Is it Safe to Buy Figures Off Ebay?
0
Alright. I'm a university student, and right now I'm pretty poor. But I still want to buy some figures. I spotted some from eBay that are a bit cheaper. But I'm not sure that it's safe to buy them, since there is a good possibility of them being fakes.
The seller is a power-seller from Hong Kong, which unfortunately is a place where there are plenty of counterfeits.

If anyone can help me out with this, it would be great.

right when buying figures off ebay a few thins to remember are
1. look for a realistic price: the way most people get fooled on eBay is by people selling stuff under retail price, business reasons dictate that if you are running a business you do not sell summin for less that it's RRP
2. stuff from china, hong kong & singapore: these 3 locations are the hot spots for fake and boot leg figures though once in a blue moon and very rarely you will find one that sells genuine products
3: stuff from japan: simply put it's always real genuine stuff
4: Read the description: the amount of people who do not read them is amazing so things to look out for when readin is this
does it say 100% genuine figure
does it say the manufacturers name
if all else fails from these my friend then jus ask some one

Do check the feedback score of the seller. Seller with 90-100% feedback are more trusted in selling the genuine item. Also trusted members have power seller icon on them so you won't have much trouble in dealing with them. And looking from the feedback of the seller you linked looks like a trustworthy seller with 2000+ positive feedback.
Like Elfen said be wary with seller from Hong Kong or China. While sometimes they sell the original items the price they offer sometimes are pretty high. So check the price with friends or people who collect the figures to see if it is worth buying the item for that price so you won't feel cheated later on.
In any case send mail of inquiry to the seller first before making the purchase. Try asking for more images of the package/box or anything to determine the item is not fake.

I know sneakyone told me he ordered a konata figurine off ebay and when he got it it was just a cheap knock off. I'd just be cautious.

Look at the sellers reputation and etc. Sometimes the problem isn't the seller or buyer...once i bought a miku figure and got lost in the way D: but that was one in other at least 25 buys i did.

Consider this: I've bought six figures from eBay (a couple of sellers) as a bit of a test (I mean, if they were genuine it was a bargain :P), and they were all fake. As has been said completely avoid China, and look for sincerely written descriptions, proper pictures (not just the promotional ones) and fair prices...but I generally wouldn't recommend it.
Feedback is meaningless as a lot of people won't realise they're fake, since they will look enough like the pictures (but way less detailed than the actual thing, maybe discoloured) to fool you, and it can also be engineered by selling to people you know, selling other items etc. As an example, both of the guys I bought from had above 99%.

That's what power seller icon is for. I noticed even the seller have 99% some of them don't have that icon.
Fortunately I haven't got any fake due to the popularity of the item I buy. Popular toys like Figma and Nendo however have lots of fake duplicates.
I recommend Toyjapan if you wanted to buy toys or figures, I heard they also do proxy service but you have to mail them first. But its one of the best ebay seller and is located in Japan.

You can get legitimate figures from eBay, but you really do have to be wary. Nothing is guaranteed; it's even possible for sellers from Japan to sell fake good, though that's obviously your safest bet.
Regardless of seller rating, I would never buy from a location listed as Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, and so on. Yes, it's possible that someone is selling legitimate goods, but it's like finding a needle in a haystack; there's going to be one seller in two hundred, if that.
Buying from the US (if that's where you are) is fairly safe, depending on feedback, but not guaranteed. One thing to keep in mind is that feedback is by no means a do all end all, even if they have a large amount of it. While people who purchase figures frequently might be able to tell legitimate figures from fakes, others may not. While even another group might not care as long as their figure looks good and they got a good price; these people will leave positive feedback, drawing others into a false sense of security. Of course this applies to sellers from everywhere, and not just the US, but it's just generally accepted that China/etc = fake, Japan = real, so the US is where feedback is probably used most.
Figures from Japan are usually real, but don't neglect to check description, price difference (between listing and MSRP - and if there's a reason for it), feedback and such. This is your safest bet, but there's no reason to be careless.
One thing you have to consider is how much a product being the real deal means to you. I'll admit to having one "fake" figure, and other than a little shipping damage that could have happened anywhere, I'm happy with it. While I purchase legitimate in almost all cases, the price difference and availability was what led me to purchase the fake ($300 versus $600-1000.)
