It Has Become Pretty Difficult To Shock Me
0
After goatse and lemonparty and thewillpower and everybodywalkthedinosaur and ... ... ...
I became hardened, cold to internet shock gags. I was chilling with some friends the other day, and one of them started humming the sad old tune from Schindler's List. Within 5 minutes, we're all giggling, humming, and cracking Hitler jokes.
Later, I realized just how little I give a fuck about the suffering of most other people. Does that make me a terrible person?
Are you like me at all, in that regard?

That's how desensitization works.Yes we are all like you (OP), somewhat desensitized. If you're wondering whether is this a problem or not answer this. On a scale of 1 to 10 do you think you could torture, Inquisition style, someone without caring?

The first 5 words of your sentence made no sense to me, but to answer that question: if 1 stands for I couldn't do it and 10 is I definitely would, it would be 1, unless it meant I had to do it to save someone important to me, because then it would be a 10.
I'm more desensitized to seeing pain than inflicting it. I don't like physically hurting people unless they deserve it - then it can be internally enjoyed.

I'd need a reason, obviously, but I would tear someone's head off if I had a reasonand a lack of punishment overhanging. What do you know of Milgram's experiment? I'd be the douchebag kicking it up to lethal voltage.

The internet and media saturation in general has that effect.
But to truly test exactly how jaded you are, try some real experience.
Very different beasts.
It's easy to become desensitized when you have the virtual barrier that separates you from whatever you may be viewing.
But to witness something live- a completely unfiltered, full-barrel assault upon all your senses- it can be rather overwhelming, and there's pretty much nothing that you can do to prepare yourself for it.

That's a very interesting experiment. Personally I wouldn't increase the voltage if I started hearing the screams, but I'm most likely only saying that because I'm conscious of the fact that the person receives no pain. But I'm not one to aimlessly, purposely and pointlessly harm people so I don't think I would.

My thesis for my Bs degree was on porn tolerance and it affects on child and adult sexual tastes and desensitization aka the junkie effect. I am Keith Richards.

I once watched helplessly as a boulder rolled over a man I'd been working alongside for eight weeks. I didn't know him too well, but we were pretty close. I cried at the time, but upon reflection, I find myself almost unaffected. I see this as a good thing, but I've been told it's not.

Whether it's "good" or "bad" is entirely subjective- as is the very existence of such concepts.
I say it's a good thing, since emotions serve purpose only within the social realm; in terms of logical and practical matters, they only get in the way and cloud one's judgment.

Spoiler:
The test subjects were given clear instructions so I would end up following those and probably killing the "person". At some point I would be thinking, "I wonder how many volts it takes to kill this guy" and possibly derive some humor out of it. Both of those in response to thoughts of "its not real right?".

I think i have become more difficult to shock, but that said i do still care about the suffering of other people. And i like to think of that as a good thing

Hi, welcome to the new internet generation.
This happened to me in about 2 years after getting my own laptop at age 15. Now, at 22, nothing truly surprises me online.

It happens to us all eventually, especially if you have spent ANY time on 4-chan.
