That's like saying whats the most important branch in the military. If common sense has taught me anything, it's that one needs the other.

If it is not for the Drums Metal Music sounds like Michael Jackson's 80's stile so for me is the drums. Also is the hardest instrument to play.

Drums. They set the timing for the rest of the instruments and to me they make a song complete in some way. Without a drum beat the song kind of feels empty to me.

When did "band" become equivalent to guitar + bass + drums + vocals ?
I like a good saxophone (starts at 0:40)

Yes for Frank Zappa. Unfortunately, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention isn't really a typical band, in any sense.
Drums are easy to play. The only difficult part of drums is getting your hands and feet to work in different rhythms. Easy to play, hard to master.
Drums are the most important, though. I say this because most bass/guitar players I know can't keep time. In fact, there are drummers I know that can't keep time. It's sad, really. But, the stereotype of the bass modestly holding everything together doesn't stand when you keep going out of your way to make sure everyone knows how important you are. Besides, if you aren't John Paul Jones, Nick Olivieri, or the bassist in Necrophagist, you ain't a great bassist! Naw, joking on that last part, but still.
There are plenty of bands without bassists. Very few without guitars. Even fewer without drums.

I'll have to say Drums, they set the timing for the rest of the band, Bass coming in second.FINALLY! Someone who understands us bassists! :D

WTF?!There's no such thing as 'the most important instrument' why do human beings have this need to compare and try to come first?I'm a musician and in my opnion the most important instrument is the one that fits best the feeling you're putting into a song, and that differs from person to person. Each instrument is like a different throat, different throats, different voices, the most beautiful thing in music is still the combination of several 'voices' completing each other and making Music

Every instrument has a place and no one instrument is superior to the other they all just work together as one. I play bass btw.

As a bass player myself..... drums. They set the rhythm for the whole song as well as the changes.

allright,i understand that each instrument needs the other and that there are others that i didnt include.(im a big SKA fan so i shoulda added trumpets and stuff =( i was just asking what ur fav. instrument was out of the four

For me it's the drums since I play drums myself. Bass would be my second choice because songs are just so unrecognizable and lack volume/depth without it.

I'm a guitarist, but I'm gonna have to say vocals, that's where the soul and emotion really comes from.

The drums is the heart of the band. It's beating gives energy to the rest of the instruments.
