My laptop screen is completely black and won't turn on

(I saw a thread like this one on the front page of tech, but mine might be a different problem.)
I own a year and-a-half old Compaq Presario CQ60 that has worked fine the whole time with no major viruses nor external injuries coming to it. But then one day when I opened up my laptop, the screen was completely black and the laptop itself was in sleep mode. I have tried various methods like disconnecting the power and and holding the power button for 30 seconds but none have worked. I have 3 questions for the techs at fakku now:
What is wrong with my laptop?
How much will repairing it cost me?
When all is said and done, will my memory still be intact, even after restarting my laptop?
Thanks for any answers at all

Disconnect the power, remove the battery. See if that helps.Tried it, didn't work.

After removing the battery, etc; does your laptop power on at all even though the screen is black? For example, are the LED buttons on, fans running, etc. If it powers on, but the screen is still black I'd say your screen is dead. I don't know how much a screen repair costs. Its probably worth it to just buy another cheap laptop before the holiday rush is over.
Your hard drive memory should still be intact. You can salvage the information by plugging it into a desktop and transferring the information or putting it into an external enclosure.

Yes, the power is still on but the screen doesn't work. I tried plugging it into a monitor but it still didn't work, and because I cannot work the laptop because it is now always in sleep mode cause the screen is not turning on, I cannot access my data.

Are you sure it's sleep mode? If it doesn't work even when plugged into a monitor, then a component was probably fried (your - maybe integrated - graphics card, you CPU, you RAM, etc.)
To access your files, you'd need to remove the hard drive and connect it to a desktop.

My laptops screen dissolved and only a black screen remained. Took it up to Frys EC and the Mofo took a dump on me. Had to wait 2 months before I got it back.

I'm pretty sure that its like what Flaser said, since the screen didn't even come on when I plugged it into a monitor. I hope I don't have to wait two months like Zombie said.

The manufacturer's website is your friend.
Follow this troubleshooting guide. If that doesn't help contact HP support via the webchat on a working computer. They will be able to help better than anyone here. The guide should work for most models. If it doesn't select your model number specificly and go to its troubleshooting section.

But yes it's most likely as Flaser said, it sounds like a hardware failure and since it's a laptop it'll cost more to get it fixed than it would a desktop. You should be able to get someone to back up the data on the hard drive if you don't want to do it yourself.
My advice: Buy a new laptop and this time DO NOT go near ANYTHING with the hp symbol on it. (I hear that their recent models haven't been too bad, but I still advise to stay away from hp)
Acer and Toshiba usually make good laptops that last a good while without any hassles. Hell, I'm typing this on a 6 year old Acer Aspire 3610 and I've never had problems with it, beyond problems caused by my own stupidity.
