I think I've been here for a LOOOOONG while, but I don't know if I count as "the gang".

POSIX time begins on midnight of January 1, 1970; computational time values on POSIX type systems are internally calculated as seconds elapsed since that moment.
The user doesn't exist, so the server has no data to draw from, and inserts the standard zero value, which is 1 January 1970 (0 seconds since that date elapsed).

Couldn't resist mentioning that it was originally 616, but was wrongly copied/translated somewhere down the line. I vaguely remember a funny story about a government that renamed a motorway from 666 to 616, to avoid any bad luck. :)
