Otaku: are there more guys or girls?
do you think there are more otaku males or females?

i was scrolling through the topics when i saw Xenor's "is otaku a dirty word" thread. i clicked on it and read through the blog posted about it. In the article a Japanese culture enthusiast Danny Choo stated “Out of the otaku population, female otaku have the most spending power, which is one of the reasons why you see an increase of boy love publications and anime featuring good looking guys.” but does this mean that there are more girls than guy otakus. or does this mean that the average otaku girl has more to spend then there male counter parts.

I wouldn't say that the fact that more female fans spend money, and a greater amount of money, indicates that there are more female anime fans, only that their desires are different. Yaoi fangirls tend to be as extreme as male otaku, but it seems that most otaku are content with simply downloading shows and watching them on their computers or game consoles; they never feel the need to spend money. (I'm one of these, I admit.) Yaoi fangirls, on the other hand, seem to want to own the things they love, especially yaoi books.
Like gizgal said, I think the number of male and female anime fans is starting to even out. Or if both sides aren't equal, the numbers simply don't matter. It's not crazy to see female anime fans nowadays, just like it's no longer crazy to see "jocks" that are anime fans. The anime culture in America has spread so much over the years, and all sorts of people are fans of anime.
That said, if I had to play Roulette with anime fandom, with guys as black and girls as red, I'd put my money on black, definitely. It seems like the safer bet.

Hard to say. I would put my money on slightly more girls. I say this because of the amount of people I see at an anime con, I always happen to notice a lot of women. That could be my libido talking.
The other thing I notice, is that if I run into a guy with geek tendencies, they always seem to be heavy on video games, and maybe table-top games. If I run into a girl with geek tendencies they always seem to enjoy anime to some degree. I could be second guessing myself on this.
Ahh, I know, I find geeky guys are always focused more on a game when it comes to geek topics, be it video game or table top. I find geeky girls more focused on anime or anime characters and other forms of video entertainment.
There are plenty of exceptions, myself being one. This is just what I run into through out my day to day.

I think this best describes what I've experienced as well. Both with the more females at cons, and the tendency for guys to be game oriented and girls to be anime oriented. I fit this trend, as I'm definitely more game oriented than anime oriented.
