Pizza is now a vegetable

"So the U.S.A. congres decided to reject Barack Obama's proposal to reduce or replace the schools cafeteria's menus in order to increase a healthy diet eating more fruits and vegetables than procesed food and junk.
The proposal was canceled after a 70 vs 30 votes (con and pro) by saying that that action will only increase fruit prices and that the US government has no right to inforce a healthy diet on their citizens.
The new menu was proposed by the Department of Agriculture itself recommended by the Medicine Instutute and the National Academy of Science."
I think this would've been a great idea considering that 1 out of 5 american 4yo children are obese, not to mention that the average american consumes 3313 cal/day (normal = 1200 - 2000)
What are your thoughts?
And... Do you have a healthy diet?

It's too late for me to start eating healthy, but not for them! I think this would be a good idea. (looks at six pack flabs and cries.)

i think it a good idea that obama tried to do something about it but again the goverment have no right to make people eat healthy, i think thats how USA see their things, even though i would like people to be less obese and more thin like me (checks at six pack) i can see them =)

Trying to give the youth more healthy choices is a good idea, but students either throw away the healthy food or just bring in junk food.

I had a Pizza last night... and thats all I had Yesterday! (It was delicious)
If School meals can be made healthier, with more variety, equally delicious to processed meals and (The main point) cheaper then why not? Only problem is that its a hassle to standardize this type of shit in schools in a society where most people are lazy and dont give a flying fuck about anything.
Im guessing Americans dont like being told EVER that "This is how its gonna be" from 'pinko commie hippy bastards'... Even if it makes perfect sense to go through with it.
The great thing about America is that you have a choice to put down the fucking burger and if you dont... Well!!

Pizza a vegetable?...
I love pizza and all but that just sounds silly saying that it's a vegetable!
I don't like this, if I had a kid I would pack his lunch.

Lol. Imagine a mom, and her kids coming home.
"Hey, kiddies, how's school?"
kid1:"Fine, mom"
kid2:"What's for dinner?"
"Some veggies, came 5 minutes ago with a diet coke."
Weird, anyone? XD

It wouldn't be totally weird if those kids were brought up on veggies and the occasional junky treat.
How we see food is learned, not something we're born with.

Definitely shouldn't be enforced. I'd have to agree, it is not the governments right to enforce a lifestyle on anyone. I'm pretty held down by that notion.
For example smoking, I hate it and I don't like it when people smoke near me. However, I think all of these smoking bans all over the country are outright ridiculous. Even bars are being pushed and prodded into agreeing to smoking bans. At this rate, the only place a smoker is allowed to smoke is in their own homes. That's pathetic, and really infringing on the smoker. For all of the studies done about second-hand smoking, and how it is portrayed in the media, there are still inconclusive studies regarding the health affects of second-hand smoke, but we want to bury that data because as a nation we want everyone to stop smoking by force.
This healthy diet crap is no different. Besides, the fruits prices were no joke. Fruit and vegetable prices would skyrocket in a food industry that already hangs too dearly on the cusp of the economy. One wrong move and prices of all food items could go up exponentially, and suddenly we'd have a lot of starving Americans. No, I'm not exaggerating.
It isn't as simple as, "Hmm, we want you to eat better, so you can only eat this and this." It flabbergasts me that some people think it is, yet these are some of the same people who become bitter after visiting a doctor because their doctor put them on some stringent diet. So wait, your pissed because your doctor is asking you to eat better, yet you want to force all children to eat better at an early age?
I just feel like this is an individual issue, and should never become an issue of the government. So the United States is an extremely obese nation? Who the hell cares? That does not affect the country as a whole, especially not the government. It is an individual issue that should be handled by said individuals. Yes, it is tragic that some people don't realize how bad they are until they are literally knocking on death's door, but that does not mean it is Big Brother's responsibility to make sure we are all healthy.

I can't really see how changing school cafeteria menu would be 'enforcing' someone to eat healthy. And if it is, are they now enforcing them to eat unhealthy? Is that any better?
I'd go for it, it's easier to affect their eating habits when they are still young.

Unfortunately the UK has already banned smoking in pubs and other places deemed a "No smoking zone" and have done for about 2 years now. At the moment it seems that the law allows you to smoke outside provided it's not in a No Smoking zone, in your own homes and out of a window. Whether that's what the law says you're allowed to do is still up for discussion though.
I don't smoke myself, but I know a few people who were affected by it. Compared to other controversial things the government has enforced on us, the negative feedback was relatively low and eventually everyone got used to it.

Do kids actually eat there school dinners isn't the food crap enough that kids would just go hungry.
My school dinners were really crappy my primary school dinners were the left over from the high school the week before and things often way out of date I remember complaining about a carton of milk being 6 months out of date and they put it back in the fridge not the bin.

I always brought my own lunch. While fairly monotonous (I made the same sandwich for 12 years), I much preferred it to the crap that school served. If they had healthier foods AVAILABLE, I might have eaten them. But no, it was all pizza, hamburgers, and french fries. And I hate potatoes and don't eat mammals...
As for trying to get people to eat healthier, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. The problem is, there are several underlying causes for people eating this way, namely poor attitudes about food and (ARGH) corn subsidies that promote syrup and oil over veggies and fruits. Still, I think people would eat healthier if the foods were available. I know I'll never go out of my way to eat stuff like, say, celery or carrots, but if they're already out, I love to nosh on them.

I don't really have a healthy diet since I eat some snacks and all, but I exercise to make up for what I eat.

Anwsering and quoting many quotes above:
Yeah, The Department of Agriculture also said that in order for the pizza to be a vegetable it needed at least 4 times more the amout of tomatoe that it already has.
It was mentioned in a similar article that the congres said it was a vegetable due to the amout of tomatoe poured on the pizza, but I'm pretty sure that's the junk food companies talking behind them.
And as for enforcing a healthy diet... well I think it's good when people are enforced to do things, depending on the actions of course, in which this case is good cus the end result is a healthier life; it's just like raising kids, you make em eat their veggies, their vitamins, etc., they may not like it, but you know and/or they may know it's good for them.
[size=10]^Not sure if paragraph above was very coherent but I think I still got my thoughts out right[/h]

Pizza a vegetable? BULLSHIT! That stuff can have vegetable on it. But the pizza itself is not a vegetable.
