Political Correctness vs. Free Speech

A few topics ago discussing tension against gays, I said that I don't hate gay people but I make gay jokes. Gizgal said something along the lines of it didn't help or relieve the tension against the LGBT community. I then said I was aware of that but I didn't want to restrict free speech because once we put a stop to jokes, free speech may be revoked if someone is 'offended'.

A lot of people make black jokes on FAKKU and use the word 'niggger'. I find the black jokes funny and I let the word 'nigger' roll off my back, but a lot of African Americans hearing the jokes said on here would be offended. I hate the fact that some African American's will get offended by the slightestthings that aren't even racist. There once was an article saying people were getting offended by the phrase/meme 'YOU MAD BRO'.

Do you think that we should go by the rule, 'If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all'? Do you think that would lead to topics being taboo? Do you think free speech is potentially tactless and harmful? Do you think people should be more thick skinned and let things roll off their back?

Yeah freedom of speech is something I believe everyone should have, but that doesn't mean you should abuse it

People make fat jokes. I let that roll of my back and I make fat jokes myself (Le example "Bloody hell they make me feel anorexic.")

Being called fat was a common insult for me at school both in Primary and Secondary school, but I join in because I could no longer give a shit at the fact that I am overweight. I overate when I was little, and I continue to like food, although thankfully I don't have an eating disorder. That's something I can't help nor care about. I am who I am.

Political correctness happens when someone is hypersensitive to something that's meant to poke fun at, but not fully take the piss, out of the subject in question.

I think it can be a bit one sided some times like if some one black called some one white trash they wouldn't say any thing but if you called them some thing similar there would be a problem I remember it happened in Big Brother once the white girl was treated like the villain and the foreign girl the victim when it was the foreign girl that started it.

The same kind of thing happens in a lot of colleges I've heard of people getting kicked out of school for rejecting some ones views when they express their extremist religious views.

It reminds me of when someone calls out a certain nationality/ethnicity, been seeing too much of this correctness crap on the news lately. It's always Latino/Hispanic, African-American, Arabian or East Asian or their proper country. But when it comes to Europeans or anyone with light skin, it's always White. It's a double standard overall as a whole, it's okay to always call the white people white, just because, but you can't call the others brown or black for example.

IMO, this whole black racism thing in America is blown out of proportion. We have black peeps suing left and right for rights because their ancestors from 150 years ago were slaves. a word can only hurt you if you let it. how weak and useless a person is who lets something so trivial as a word have power over them.

People are allowed to say whatever they want (except threats; those will get in you in trouble with the law). but that doesn't mean that others can't be offended by what people say. i'm black and i tell a lot of racist jokes to my family and they still get offended sometimes. it's not because they think that i'm a racist, but that whole "words will never hurt me" stuff is BS.

you can say whatever you want. but don't get mad when someone else calls you out and says you're racist or a homophobe because you tell a racist or homophobic joke. you gotta expect that kind of response since people on the internet don't know enough about you personally to tell whether the joke is "all in fun" or because you really are discriminating.

Jokes are a bit of a in between zone, but I'd say forbidding them doesn't really serve the purpose of discouraging racism. The forbidders are just seen as oversensitive prudes.

As a rule, I don't think any matter should be so much of a taboo that it couldn't be joked about at all. Sure, printing it on paper would be improper. Same thing if a politician would be caught saying it. Offensive jokes have a tendency to be the funniest ones. At the moment I can't think any good jokes (except puns. Puns are awesome) that don't at least indirectly offend a person or a group. Ruling out all the potentially offensive material, funny or not, about a certain subject would be too much. It might even hinder the public discourse, as such things as commercials, ads and different art forms are used to forward a person's views. Controversial matterial raises the best discussions, and if it's controversial, it's usually offends someone.

The thing that makes offensive jokes bad is that they are so easy weapons for bullies. The people who say 'words won't hurt you' are probably thinking about a scenario in which someone more or less random says it to you once or twice. But what about if everyone you know told you three offensive jokes about a certain characteristics of yours every day? The worst thing is that they don't have to be 'evil people' to do so, it's a thing someone starts and others will follow. They might honestly not realise they are doing anything wrong, it's all just for laughs.

I'd draw the line in telling the joke to someone just because they are black. It's not always the actual words, but the knowledge that the person wants to make fun of you that is hurtful.

And I'm all for free speech...

But Gizgal does bring in an interesting point. Sometimes behavior of others does reinforce negative behavior, especially among kids. Just the other day, a friend of mine who works at the local middle school told me about how some kids were pretty much harassing a kid. I don't remember if the kid had some mild mental illness, or something of that sort, but they were vicious to him. Sometimes there is a point where you can take things too far.
