The only effective metaphor I can think of would be warring countries; You got countries that are either invaded or capitulate/surrender, and you got those countries which do all the conquering.
As such, when a woman's doing the deed, it is seen as giving something up. For guys, another score.
That's my take upon how that mentality developed, anyways.

Polygamy is all moral-based actually. People have different moral values which lead them towards different paths in life. The people who gave props were probably sociopaths who were never given basic knowledge. I.E. Otakus(no offense) probably won't get laid because their lack of morals have driven them to prioritize Anime instead of education or their very social lives. As, the number of otakus or no-lives proliferate, the world becomes more insane. Thus, moral values become obsolete and things like polygamy happen. School Days was an Anime with definition and moral. It refines viewer's morals and provide entertainment. So remember to get your moral values straight.
