Pondering Question
0
So, if anyone read before my post got lost, I'm a professional DJ. Don't get excited, although I have been told I need more rep than I get and I need to get set up somewhere online.
I do small gigs here and there, underground clubs and stuff. Partly to do with mainstream kids (who I detest) ripping the shit off good music, turning it bad with poor beat patterns and stuff. I can't stand to spin terrible tunes like that. I like to think the artists I'm mixing have put some thought into their tracks. Examples: Boxcutter, Flying Lotus. Sort of abstract/experimental (with aspects of Dub.) I do like to mess around with liquid drum & bass and trance too, but I rarely get set up with clubs around that because I don't spin mainstream.
But yeah, you're probably wondering where I'm going with this... I have a question. Do you think there's any point fighting to keep what I think is good music out there? Or should I just give in and use the tracks which I hate? It's been pondering my mind, and money's tight. I've been advised that if I did, I'd probably hit it a lot bigger than I am at the moment...

If you wanna make more money, sell out and do what people will pay for.
If you want to keep your respect, carry on with the real good stuff.

Always, ALWAYS keep trying to get the music you like and want the world to experience out there.
My DJ friends around here are struggling with the same thing.
My one friend worked at a goth/industrial club. But he plays more noise and likes to also include in new tracks (since all the regulars just want to live in the 80's, apparently). I mean, old music is good...but there comes a point where you got to get in the newer stuff.
Anyways, he would more often ignore requests (often saying he's not a jukebox) and would instead continue to expose people to how awesome and fun noise is as well as new tracks for the goth/industrial genre.
He was told he would have a month break (the club owner is pretty much a huge bitch). And, instead, he quit.
It was rough for him.
But now him and my other friend have started their own, brand new night at a different bar and have had excellent feedback. And they're going to continue to spin what they want and what they know people need to hear.
So keep going.
Don't give up.
You have my support.

The Lord of Butts!
In my opinion, its never wrong to fight for what you like.
If you would only play music that you dont like, that would only lead to make you hate what you actually love.
I really hope that there are some places where you can play your style without having limitations. Everyone deserves to enjoy what they like.
I support you on this ^_^ Never give up trying.

You guys are great, I'm really liking the idea of setting up my own bar/club, a load of my friends suggested the same. I know of few places in my city that have what I have in mind, and a bunch of people are wanting somewhere like it. I'm not really a business person though, so I would have to ask around for someone to partner up with me... My manager's not the best kind for that stuff either, we do more of a collaboration thing and get together whatever we can! Plus I lack the money to invest in something like that at the moment, so I'd need to find some way of getting around that which won't be too risky.
I've also got a few contacts that I can grind money out of through a few gigs which I don't really want to do, but it's at a 16+ club, so I doubt the kids would really care if the mixing was poor. I don't really mind, sometimes you gotta do stuff that you don't want to in life, right?
For now, until I get a foothold on any other ideas I have, I'm going to continue doing what I love and, if need be, scrape money doing other things.
I'm lucky my partner/manager has empathy for my situation, I'd pretty much be screwed without him!
If I breakthrough on anything big, I'll be sure to let you guys know. Thank you for the advice and support :)

Remember when MTV used to play Trance and Techno? Those were the days of free thinking and originality. Now a days, gangsters are turning skater, and the skinny jean fad has taken full dominance over society. People don't care whats good or whats bad anymore, they just want to fit in.
I say play the music you like. Even if no one else likes it, at least you get to say "I still have my dignity".
