Porcupine Tree

One of the most talented music groups in recent generations if not widely regarded as the most talented group of musicians today, Porcupine Tree's style is hard to define under anything apart from innovative. Progressive, post, psychedelic, metal, alternative, the genius that flows through front man Steven Wilson's mind, from lyrics to their signature video showmanship, Porcupine Tree stands as a testament to what music truly is - an art form, seemly forgotten in todays world of glitz, glamor and money.
It's safe to say the Porcupine Tree is one of my favourite bands ever, right up there in chemistry of sound, innovation and influence as Pink Floyd, The Beatles or Queen. Only a few bands have ever gave me such a sense of be-wonderment and natural euphoria. Porcupine Tree is one of those bands. If you haven't listened to them yet and are a fan of rock, give them a listen. And if you're not, try them anyways ;D.
So, any other fakku denizens here Porcupine Tree fans?

Not a fan yet, but the way you describe them piqued my interest. Which album of theirs would you recommend for first-time listeners?

One of my favorite bands along with Green Carnation and Spock's Beard. In Abesentia is probably my favorite album, and the album I'd recommend, BLZebub. Mostly because it has The Sound of Muzak, which is arguably my favorite Porcupine Tree song.

'Trains' is the track that lures a lot of people into the band. My personal recommendation would be my own favorite, Fear of A Blank Planet, which is quite progressive, borderline rock/metal with extensive use of the keyboards.
Actually, if you're a person that appreciates good prog music every now and then, I'm sure anything from 'Lightbulb Sun' on would be a good place to start with, I myself did so with 'Deadwing'. Their newest release as of now might be something you'd want to save for later, its songwriting is a bit slower, experimental and less exciting than usual. I love it myself, it's still a very atmospheric album, but it's imaginable that people starting out could be turned off by this.

The name rings a bell
I think i saw them on TV years ago, back when I was forcing myself to like metal.
I'm going to check them out though, like BLZebub51 said, the way you described them interests me. I respect musicians who really mix things up.

I find it almost impossible to pick a favourite album, it's like a flavour of the week kinda thing for me. Right now though it would have to be Fear of a Blank Planet, mainly because of Anesthetize.

Excellent band. By my vote their best album is Fear of a Blank Planet, which has the advantage of being a]really good, and b]short and compact enough you can listen to it in one sitting, like a classic Pink Floyd album.
Also, they have the special place of being the first band I saw in saw in concert.
