Awhile ago i had this conversation with someone about our passions and if we were pursuing careers in them and by passion i'm referring to those few who found something they really loved like Art, Writing etc. etc.
So the person i was talking to is already a Conceptual Artist for a company and he had some things to tell me about pursuing passions, you won't love every step of it even if you think otherwise. For example artists like to avoid tackling a few things like pose and anatomy, i've come across alot of people who go with the theory that if they just draw alot and avoid learning human anatomy will eventually not require it. Another thing is they draw what they like, the guy i was talking to started his passion as an anime character artist but alot of what he does now is background/level concepts that kind of stuff. Another example, directors, it takes more then just coming up with a few good story ideas and writing a few scripts.
Point being there's alot of in between stuff people like to skip over because they think it's their passion so they should only be doing stuff they like to do. Chances are you're going to have to do alot of things you didn't want to do or think you'd have to do to reach this goal. And you might not get exactly what you want right away. Life isn't so grand, hard work doesn't always bring you the desired results but it will bring something. If you want to be a animation director you might have to do more then just write great scripts, learn maybe sketching or animation and start at the bottom then work up it might take years, hell you might be fifty by the time you get the chance to direct.
Now before someone gets shot down or depressed that they're lifelong job is now out of reach let me end with this. i mainly posted this to kind of put things in a more realistic perspective. Figure out a real way to get to where you want to be and don't just make something up in your head then dream about it. Talk to the right people, read things and go learn shit and get a leg up on the dreamers, because your thinking realistically.
Anyhow that's my time, wanted to share this conversation i had with my friend. Feel free to throw in your two cents.
Much Love Fakku,
Maj Out

this is hilarious, i ran into this brick wall some time ago
i like drawing so i dream of having that as part of my life. but after a looking over my art i realized how much i sucked. i sucked at drawing stuff and i was only drawing anime, i needed to get away form that but i hate drawing realistically.
so i did a simple move, i stopped drawing when i finished highschool. it was a simple plan stop drawing and forget what i know in art. so after a year or so more of not drawing i became very rusty that kind of disappointed me, regardless that was the plan. so i went out got some books on anatomy and perspective and started form scratch and i gotta say im loving the outcome of my new found ability.
over for me it was how willing i was and how long im willing to wait until my art actually will help me get somewhere

y'know, you're right. Can't remember how many times I've been shot down, but really, just being up there in the clouds is enough for me. From my dream to build designer organisms to wanting to use them to conquer the world, it's not like I think I can ever reach my goals. There no point if I don't try though, is there? To live in the heat of passion regardless of if my life will mean anything, because if I don't then I know it never will.

One specific thing about my dreams is that I don't expect any one of them to pass, maybe outside of getting high-up in corporation or starting my own business at some point.
But for the most part, I rely on brutal materialistic calculation and analysis of what I can or can't do.
For example, I wanted to be a movie actor. A famed one of course. But would I be capable of handling all the work? No, I don't think so. Especially since nobody becomes a great actor right away, you need some backing, somebody noticing you and then you can climb up on the ruthless tree of fame... so while it was a great dream, it wasn't (and still isn't) in any way feasible for me, so I didn't and will not peruse it.
Which is partially why my long-term plans are all rather ambiguous and wrapped in "maybes".
Sure, it may be downing for someone to realize that they can't really carry out their "dream goal X", but it's better to think it out thoroughly, then just rush head on into it. Because then, if you fail, the disappointment will be even greater.
The hardest and most important step of the journey is whenever you're capable of walking through it or not.
