However, the chances of death are considerably higher without these. Depending on how bad the conditions are, it can nearly be a 1 in 4 chance, due to increased risk of infection, blood loss, etc.
A woman of weak constitution will definitely be at higher risk.
Not sure about the depression thing. If it does have an effect, I don't believe it's by any measurable amount.
