Recording a Skype call
0
Now I'm no technophile, so hang with me here. I tried to do this the other day during a test and it simply wasn't picking up the other person. I don't know if it's because Audacity isn't fit to do this or that I screwed up somewhere. Does anyone know a free and easy way to do this? Thanks in advance.

Uh I recall in Vista you could right click the speaker icon in Windows and go into recording devices, hit playback, go into the properties for speakers, and then unmute microphone. This will make your microphone play in the speakers. Then you set the system to record Stereo mix and you should be good. Though I *think* it depends on what sound card/drivers you have.

Yeah, I'm not hearing anything in my speakers when I have my headset on. The microphone thing doesn't appear to be muted. Hmm...

Get audacity (a free sound editing and recording program) and when you start a skype call, just press the red circle to start recording.
^you just need first to select Stereo Mix on your settings to make it record the sounds. As you might not be able to select it at first, you need to right click the speaker icon on the task bar and select recording devices > right click there and select two options in order to Stereo Mix to appear:
"Show Disabled Devices"
"Show Disconnected Devices"

I tried Audacity and it only recorded my end of the conversation. Also, mine doesn't quite look like the one shown there. I'm using Vista in case that helps at all. Also mine just shows on recording devices the following: Microphone (Working) & WaveOut Mix (unavailable) when I select both of those options.

If you're hearing your end you're recording the microphone. If you're not seeing Stereo Mix I'd either bet that Wave Out is your equivalent or that you need to change drivers. If nothing else works your sound card could just suck. If it's disabled just right click it and hit enable. If the microphone is set to be playing through the speakers and the slider option for it is set to around 80 it should work, otherwise it's probably your mic.
