Audacity crashes ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Trust me. It crashed on me two days ago on my fourth time recording with it, and my friend had already switched to Adobe Soundbooth for the exact same reason. I also remember it crashing in people's language exams at school some years ago.
Fair enough if it's just casual stuff, it's not exactly unusable, but if you want it for anything important it is horribly unreliable.

I am going to side with Ethil on this one. I use Fraps. I love it. I have been using it for doing those "Let's Play" videos you see on Youtube all the time back when I played Minecraft.

Fraps? I heard it's the most popular choice.Fraps can only record Direct3D and OpenGL. So you can't record your desktop or regular software.
OP, although it isn't free, I recommend ZD Soft Recorder. It's the program I've been able to get the best results with and that puts the least load on the cpu from the ones I've tried.

Thank you, I believe that ends my quest.
