Reparing an old laptop.

I'm trying to repair a old laptop I got 5 years ago for my mother to use. But there are a few problems..
- When powered up it sits then turns off again then back on in a constant loop.
- Only turns on while being charged
- The screen is just black when turned on
These are the main problems and I got a diagnostic on it awhile back. They said the mother board was fried and I needed a new one. Any idea what's wrong; I do think it's the CPU though but I've never come across something like this so i'm not entirely sure.
Most say just get a new laptop but I like repairing old things.
Also, It's a compact laptop. Thanks in Advance~

Battery could be dead.
Can you get into safe mode?
Just reformat and install the os.

I can't get into safe mode because of the On and Off loop. I'll give reinstalling the OS a try.

Hmmm, had the same problem. Actually i still do. My laptop is three years old, and its broken down to bits.
My wifi card is broken, my speakers are broken, my battery is broken. I have to use it when charged without the battery. Lifes hard, i think the only reason it broke cause it fell a lot, lol.
Im not really quite sure about the solution to fixing it, but all i did was get a desktop instead! :D
All i can say is now, Goodluck on trying to get your precious laptop fixed!

try to make sure the cooling fan isn't blocked and that all heat sinks are mounted properly, because the frequent shut off could be due to overheating also

Check the memory (RAM) seating - if you're able to dis assembly it then by all means do it. The Battery may be dead but the constant looping is damn odd. My battery is dead but I haven't got the same kind of problem as you (It got smashed 2 times anyway) Check the video connector from the mainboard too, it maybe loose or need some replacement.
AGAIN
You should download technical manual from your manufacturer's website (Compaq and HP provides it for their laptops) and do the folowing thing:
1. Check the memory (RAM) seating
2. Check the video connector from the mainboard

Constant looping usually indicates that yes, the motherboard is in one way or another broken. Easiest solution is to find a laptop motherboard (super hard to find a decently priced one) and disassemble old parts cpu, hdd, ram, battery, etc then assemble them onto a compatible motherboard. You're better off buying a new laptop since laptop motherboards are outrageously priced. If you're one of the dozens of people out there who just like repairing stuff break and fix a gear clock, it's surprisingly refreshing.
