The way i see it, respect is given until something is said or done to make me not respect. Are babies born with respect? What aspect of a baby should you respect? The fact that they made it to the womb as a sperm, perhaps? But so did all of us who are alive. Respect the fact that it's alive? We're all alive. Personally, you start with zero respect when talking to me, and it is gained or lossed. When you achieve "Respected" status with me, I see you as a competent human being who deserves about 90% of my thinking capacity. I respect Menelik II and my older brother.
To me, if I have zero respect for a person, then I would have no qualms with hitting that person or verbally abusing them, which is something I would not do to just any person off the street. So, for me as well, everyone has a certain amount of respect from me, and they can either increase or decrease it. If someone acts like a complete asshole, then they will lose the intrinsic respect that I give them for simply being a person.
If everyone starts at zero, then you cannot go down. I can think of a lot of people that I respect far less than a random person I see on the street.

Voted for Father only because my Grandmother (On my Fathers side) is no longer with us.
She was a great woman.

Wanna share a thing my dad always told me and my sibs.
"...You may disrespect me, but you NEVER disrespect your mother. Do you hear me? Never, and I mean Never, disrespect you mother, or else you will get this 10.5 stuck up your butt. Even if I had to come back from the grave to do it..."
I'm dead serious. This is what my dad told us during one of his "Talks".

Gotta respect yourself before respecting others. Or was it love yourself? Either way, I respect myself more than most of the other options.

I respect my father because he's the most honest, kind and hardworking person I know. I can only hope to be half the man that he is.
