RPG Maker XP Help?

I have no idea whether this would go here or in the Games section, nor do I know if this has some huge thread, so please move if needed. I only have 2 questions, so I'll make this brief.
1. When I try to test my game, the character's sprite doesn't appear. It's invisible or something. How do I fix this?
2. I tried adding other sprite sheets, and when I tried to select a sprite to use, the game only lets me select half of it, or sometimes even less than that. How can I select the whole thing?
To help #2 make more sense:

About #2: If you are trying to make an npc, you can just make two of them, one for each half, place them together, make them have the same code and some variable so that if one half tells you something, the other half wont repeat.
But then again you might have problems when talking to them, as one half might face you while the other doesnt, though with a bit of thinking you might some solution...
