SATA 2.5 Hard Drive to Desktop

The motherboard on my laptop died and I still need some of the files on the hard-drive that are connected to the laptop.
Does anyone know if I safely can connect a SATA 2.5 Hard Drive for Notebooks to a Desktop, either internally or USB?

This is the Hard-Drive I'm using.

Any information would be helpful.

You can buy a external case for it, so you can use it as external HDD. You can also buy an adapter to change one of the 3.5 mounts in the case to a 2.5and connect it as you would a 3.5 HDD.

All sata drives use the same connectors, if you have extra power connectors from your power supply and additional sata ports on your desktop mother board you can connect you 2.5" hdd to it and get the info off of it. You don't need to buy anything unless you need a sata cable or want to use your 2.5" hdd as a back up in your desktop.

Mount it in the back tray of your desktop case via a sata cable and sata power.

Or tape it somewhere.. everything works.

Otherwise known as a $5 piece of metal.

Or a $30 piece of plastic.

Or a free piece of sheet metal bent in a vice and drilled and threaded to fit.

Or tape/velcro.

Do I have to get a specific type of Sata Cable or are all Sata cables the same (I haven't had time to see if I have an extra one, so I just need to know in case I don't)?

Nope, all sata cables are the same. So if you do have an extra you can just hook it up with no problems.

Since you HDD is sata2 then you can use any sata cable except an eSata cable. But for future reference not all sata cables are the same.

Esata =/= sata, esata are for external hdds only, and yes I know an externals hdd is the same as an internal hdd. You can not hook a hdd to a esata cable, and yes you can't use an esata cable since it requires and esata port, and some sort of esata to sata connector/crossover, hence why I said all "sata" cables are the same.

They are exactly the same. eSATA just means that it is an external SATA port. The cables are exactly the same.

The only differences in the cables is that newer cables have a locking mechanism on it so it is less prone to falling out of the socket.

eSata cables are different, they aren't L shaped but I shaped. I am unsure why are different, but the eSata cables have more protection from EMI then regular sata cables.
As for the clips on the sata cables, some come with them and some don't but in the end they are still both sata cables.
