Self Confidence vs. Bragging

How can you tell if a person is self-confident or a braggart? What's your definition of self-confidence and boasting? Please provide some scenarios and examples.

In my opinion, bragging is not keeping it to yourself unless asked. If you bring it up without being asked (especially if it's not related to the subject at hand) it's bragging.

The way I see it, self confidence is to have a positive opinion about yourself and letting other people see it naturally. Eg. You go out with your friends, you feel good about yourself, you are confident and smooth while talking to people of the opposite sex, you know when to speak up and what to say in a job interview, debate, etc.

Bragging is to take a positive quality about yourself and 'force' someone else to aknowledge it with the intent of pleasing your own ego or hurting that person's. Eg. "See this jacket? Cost me 1200 dollars. I'd loan it to you if you weren't a piece of human garbage who would probably melt it's tissue with your toxic, disgusting, filthy skin" (Maybe that's a bit to far but you get the point)

"A self confident person does not need to tell others of their accomplishments, they would instead let others find them on their own, and if never, be contempt with it never known." Is what I think I would go with.

Bragging seem to originate from some sort of insecurity, a desire to be acknowledge in some manner, strong enough to motivate actions too.

A self confident person can use that confidence to strive forward and have a firm grip on their abilities, too much confidence would mean too much pride, and therefore they would become arrogant. Because of that they would brag about their "superiority". There are also braggarts that are so not because they actually posses anything to make them superior but just because that they believe people will accept them or be amazed by who they say they are. Usually people that are like that brag about things that they don't have unlike an arrogant person.

Self-confidence is when you have the balls to do something great and be humble afterwards.

Bragging is when you have the balls to do something great and showing it off to the world afterwards.

Bragging are people who tell others what they have regardless of the situation or of being asked and look down on people

Self confidence is people who say they can do it with a smiley and friendly face and most of the time they say it in order to help out on a task. Though most of the times they might just fake the confidence, like I am, even though I'm very good at things my lack of confidence prevents me from working at my full potential

Braggart: "My penis is 8 1/2 inches"
Self-Confident: "Why don't you check it out yourself"

I think the second one also counts and exhibitionism and narcissism, depending on if it's a joke or serious. As well, for the first one, if its an accurate answer, he simply answered the question truthfully, depending on tone I can understand how it's bragging.

being self-confident means when something needs doing you just do it with no complaints.

being a braggart means you do that same thing except you feel the need to tell everyone you did it.

To be honest, I feel it's very hard to tell who is self-confidence or a braggart in real life. I've met some people who at first seem to be confident and humble but when I talk to them, I feel they talk about themselves too much.

Off the top of my head, 2 scenarios I can think of.
Are they asking for your opinion on things they do? That could be an attempt to seek reassurance or vindication.

Do they speak of themselves leaving you in a position to only be able to praise/agree with? That would be more along the lines of bragging.

Well, more like they always talk about how successful they are in x subject. It's true when they do that I had no choice but to agree with them.

I guess you can say they were showing off? Not sure if it's the same with braggart though.

Google definition of Braggart is: "A person who boasts about achievements or possessions", So I'd say they are.
