Should I get flu vaccine?
Should I get the flu vaccine?

Hey fakku-ers. The harsh winter is coming, and I was wondering whether or not I should get vaccinated for flu.
Now, normally, I welcome getting sick from time to time (common cold or flu), because I welcome my body's way of defending itself naturally. However, I've been severely injured 4 months ago, and I've been immobilized and severely weakened due to sedentary life. I have difficulty breathing, which is worsened by movement. For example, if i go outside for an errand (like a doctor's visit) for 3 hours, I'm stuck home for a week due to severe pain and soreness in my chest. Sad thing is that my PCP doctor does not know what the cause is.
I'm sure the majority of us have been vaccinated for a lot of diseases )hep A, hep B, measle, chickenpox, etc. Should I man it up and risk getting flu? or take vaccination for protection against specific flu viruses (but not common cold).

Get it. There is little to no harm in getting the flu vaccine.
You might get the cough and sniffle for a few days, but that's the body's way of reacting to the vaccine. It's natural.
There are also alternatives to the flu vaccine if you dislike needles. The alternative is to get a nasal spray flu vaccine. It does the same exact thing as a flu shot, just up the nostrils instead of the arm.
Bottom line is that if you are feeling sick, the only way to help yourself out is to take initiative in your body's well being.

I mean, okay, you can just rely on your own defensive system, but, if you got time, it would always be better to act for pre-confidence than relying on some thing you cant predict!
BTW, goodluck on your chest pain and soreness!

There are people who have complications from receiving a flu shot, especially if one is already sick when receiving the shot because it can cause complications by throwing off your bodies natural immune system responses.
The chances of any given flu shot actually preventing the years current flu strain, is astronomically low. So, there is very little point in getting a flu shot, when complications related to the shot could actually give you flu like symptoms.
It is entirely a gamble, but to me, not a gamble worth paying for. Then again, I actually get flu shots for free, but even then I rarely take the time out to go to the Board of Health in my county to be vaccinated. Not worth my time.

Haven't you gotten yourself patched up since asking us or are you in recovery atm?
If so you should get the shot better safe than sorry imagine your current condition but you coughing up your lungs all day.

People with depressed immune systems regularly get sick from the vaccine itself, and you have a preexisting condition, this time. I wouldn't go for it.
Also, I'm in the Army, and they use us for human trial of the next year's flu vaccine. This year had a high rate of symptom occurrence, next year's won't.

If its free/cheap, go for it.
There are no real reasons no to get a vaccine. Some places, though, flu vaccine costs an arm and a leg (over here, for instance, without insurance it costs upward of $60), so some people just man it up. But it if it free/cheap, go get it.

I got one recently while I was in for something irrelevant, because I have mild asthma. The next week I came down with a cold, cough and sore throat that lasted for another two weeks, and are still lingering. I have no idea what the odds are or whether that was even related, but that is my solitary personal experience. I was totally up for getting the jab before that. :P

You should try consulting another doctor about your chest pains. I know a man whose had an unidentified urinary tract disease and was a year away from dying because his doctor (a good doctor I know) couldn't identify the disease. Then he was recommended to see one of the new doctors in the area and she diagnosed him with the disease (rare but apparently she encountered while studying) and the man is still alive and well.

I agree with the "ask your doctor" idea. since you're already seeing a doctor you should ask him for his opinion. he may even tell you not to because of your condition. better safe than sorry.

Get one. You won't die anytime soon.
But if the unlikely event happens, Dibs on your media player.

Meh if your currently at a point where your immune system and homeostasis is being challenged and your currently not dying your probably immune for this year's two strains, more than likely you'll get an adverse reaction if you take it and for that reason alone I choose to sit in the bathroom whilst they call everyone to get vaccinated because missing about 16-32 hours that could be spent working isn't worth taking something I know will get me sick because apparently adults cant get the weakened strain given to children and my friends are assholes who won't sign for me out of spite/lulz.

If you have a poor immune system, go ahead and get it if you want. Otherwise, it can weaken your antibodies and make you more vulnerable to future strains if you get vaccinations that are made from weakened viruses.

Are you part of an at risk group that faces dangerous complications from getting the flu? if not, leave it for those who are.
