I know exactly how you feel. I am in almost the same position as you, except that I'm planning to study there hopefully in 2013.
You seem to be determined. Don't give in to others and do what you want to do. This might be the best way to achieve your dream, right? You never know when will you get another chance and you don't want to have regrets later.
Other users, especially VGuy already gave you great advices to get you started, there is not much else to add. Since you wrote you also watched some Vlogs you should know a little bit of the more "real" Japan. Also TheJapanChannelDcom might give you more unbiased insight into Japan and Japanese society, especially the How To playlist.
Your worries are understandable, travelling by yourself into unknown country is frightening indeed. The number one thing is to learn japanese, living there for any period of time without knowing the language would be way too difficult. Try to learn at least the basics.
Go, follow your dreams and no matter what don't quit. You have my full support.

I would suggest "rossetta stone" to try and learn the language. Basic communication like food and bathroom shouldn't be too hard if you put your mind to it
and as for UP TO DATE information on the culture and social taboos in Japan, I suggest this:
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/japan
The lonely planet book/resource for japan that you can buy is currently ranked #1 travel books by Ny Times, BBC, and Discovery Channel.
In all out honesty, I have to tell you that opportunities like this DOES NOT COME OFTEN. This is as serious as it gets. This is one of those points in your life that can help change your life forever and its up to you to grab at this opportunity with both hands.
Seriously, an opportunity like this does not come often, especially in this economy. Work hard, and you'll be rewarded in the future.

I studied Japanese for 5 years, and my teacher, (who's English but lived in Japan for years before that) said that while living in Japan, "was one of the best experiences in his life", "the amount of racism and iceiness he recieved from the Japanese made him desperate to leave".
(However, the fact that you are Half-Asian will help you out slightly. At least you're not some caucasian, with blonde hair and blue eyes. That's where the gaijin complex really kicks in.)
Anyway, please don't throw away this oppurtunity just because you're slightly worried. This is one of those choices that will make you look back on in a couple of years and regret deeply.
Anyway, that's my opinion. Extremely jealous by the way, you're very lucky.
