It's a mind boggling thing. If your from certain part of the US or canada.. even the world.. we can this salad more.
West coast us/canada and most of the southwest it's a green salad or a salad with green mostly in it.
Midwest it macaroni
South is potato and mac.
Pasta is another mostly southern half of the us.
And the east... i don't care.
Which is weird because in Basque and Catalan cooking it only was potato or mac.
Antipasto is my fav just because i can eat a ton of cured and smoked meats.
I was in the midwest in a dinner.. ordering food and i asked if i can have a side salad and the waitress said ' Potato, mac or fruit.' I said 'no i mean a green salad'. Which she replied... you mean the stuff on the burgers? Which i love a ham and pea salad, but in need greens.

I'm from MN, pretty much every restaurant I've been to have mostly the same choices: macaroni, usually for the kids, salad(green), and potatoes.

I have green salad more, but if I had the choice I'd have potato salad.

When I do have salads, it is usually just plain lettuce, so not much of a salad.

I mostly eat green salad and to be honest I dont quite even count macaroni or potato salad as salad. Because in Finland when you talk about salad, everyone automatically thinks you talk about green salad. And thats because most of the people call green salad here just salad and if there's something added there like potatoes, then its potato salad.
