The Silent Hill movie adaptation; was it good?

History has shown us that movies based off video games generally suck...BIG TIME. The blame can be pointed at various people for various reasons:
-The cast & crew have never played the game which they are making a movie of, thus can't replicate it accurately. (Doom, for example)
-The director feels it's better to stray off from the franchise a bit/a lot (Resident evil: extinction, for example)
-Bad choice of actors, lack of budget...
the list goes on...
I was wondering what the FAKKU users thought of the movie adaptation of Silent hill? Is it an exception to the seemingly never-ending list of awful video games-to-movies? Or is it just another dud among the others?

Also, to those of you who did like the movie, good news: there will be a sequel, and the story will focus on the 3rd silent hill game. IF you've played it, you will recognize everything and every part of this trailer:

Silent Hill is by far the best Game to Movie adaptation there has been. In fact, Silent Hill the movie is better then most horror movies nowadays. It's beats the ever loving hell out of Jason and Freddy Kruger movies including the updated remakes we're getting nowadays and even beats the Saw movies except the first one. Silent Hill actually did what Horror movies are suppose to do and scare us. I don't mean that other horror movies nowadays don't scare, but they usually rely on cheap theatrics, jump scares and pop up scares. Not to say that those aren't scary in themselves, but they are too telegraphed in horror movies now.
However, Silent Hill the movie is not all good. There is plenty wrong with the movie. Where they went terribly wrong was in introducing the town people and the side kick female character. The whole point of the original Silent Hill games was the feeling of isolation. You walked about it with the sense that the town itself was alive and an enemy. You were to face it alone and the perils it would throw at you. Basically, Atmosphere. A good horror movie, game or book, must give the reader/viewer/player good atmosphere. It needs to project the consumer into the world they're trying to convey and Silent Hill manages this, but only in the early half of the movie.
Some scenes in the movie were entirely unneeded as well. We all know that pyramid head was there for fan service and nothing more. All the scenes where the husband was searching for his wife were unnecessary as they did nothing to the plot. In my opinion the towns folk should have been replaced with flash backs or some sort of visualization of past events.
Overall it's a good movie. However the plot and dialogue let it down in my opinion. It's still the best video game movie hands down though.

I agree with Holic there. But i still didnt get the ending. Maybe im too stupid to understand, but they were trapped in that world right?

It was alright. Pyramid Head was badass so it was good enough for me since I don't expect much from video game based movies.

It's not bad but not that great either if anything, but at the same time it's easily the best videogame adaptation yet, unless im forgetting something.
The first part of the movie was really good, but the second part, when all those church-idiots came into the picture, was kinda meh.
Also, and i never thought i'd say this, but i wish they hadn't played so many tracks from the games as they did, it just felt like they wanted to cram in as many songs as they could to please the SH fans without even thinking if it suited the mood of what was currently happening in the movie.
But yeah, overall the movie is decent, and the soundtrack is, naturally, epic.
