The Sophomore Slump
0
So I thought I'd start up this topic to figure out how other people have done it or if it happened to them.
I just completed my first full year of college and now officially a Sophomore. However, this past year I've been thinking about changing my major. (Little background about myself for this to make sense. I originally was a part-time student years ago as a computer programmer but dropped out because I didn't like programming. A while later I went back to school and changed my major to Civil Engineering due to the job I've got now where I work in a engineering office).
However, lately I've been thinking that even Civil Engineering isn't right for me. I almost didn't pass my calculus class my first semester (got a C, I got lucky that the teacher was one of those teachers that uses the final exam as your final grade) and was on the verge of failing my Statics class (got a D-, though the whole class had a problem with the teacher).
Lately, I've been thinking about going into Film Making/Film Studies. Over the past year I was helping out a friend of mine on an independent film he was making for his Senior Project and I had two classes in the Film area as part of my art credit for General Education and joined a drama club at college (which pretty much was a friend forcing me into it) but overall I've loved doing the work on this. Making videos, editing, creating a story and looking at the different types of film and its history.
However, with thinking this I am somewhat afraid that this could be just a phase I'm going though with film as it is something new and I liked (though I'll be honest, as a teenager my friend and I use to make mini movies but we got rid of these years ago).
So anyway, back to the topic, has anybody here felt the Slump in which they feel the original major they choose was not right for them and changed later on?

Didn't realize there was a name for it. I encountered this after my very first semester. I was in Business Administration, but that didn't seem like the type of thing I'd enjoy, so I took more general courses the semester after. For the semester I just finished, I actually went and changed majors to Information Technology because I previously had a job I really enjoyed working as an intern in the IT department of a local company. Now, I'm thinking of changing majors again to Math or something. My knowledge of computers was (and still is) only at a surface level and while I had the desire to know more, I realized that I didn't have the desire to learn more if it meant work (I'm a terrible person, I know). I was thinking of going into math because it comes naturally to me and I don't really have to try that hard. But what I really want to get into is audio engineering. Sadly, the closest thing they have to that at my school is just a recording class. I'll still take that class, but in any case, I really need to stick with something because I literally cannot afford to be indecisive.

From my point of view, you're indecisive. One day, you chose Engineering because you work in an Engineering office, the next day you want to do Film Studies because you just finished helping out your friend making a movie.
Anyway, back on topic, feeling that kinda stuff is absolutely normal, after all you don't really know what you enjoy.
University these days are flexible. Here in Australia, in your freshman year they give you 8 introductory subjects to do that is mandatory so you can choose and know what you feel like doing, so that you can change course if you have to in your sophomore years.
You get my point, these things are very normal.
