To Become an Animator

Ever since I finish High school I have always thought of working as an Animator and one day become well known. My inspiration actually came from when I watch a japanese animated movie called "Spirited Away".

A Hayao Miyazaki film eh, i was inspired when i saw Laputa: Castle in the Sky, it's one of his earlier works. Did you want to become a Director or just be an Animator in general?

well I suggest you pursue a course that has something to do with that then, animation. Both 2D and 3D animation. That is if you are really interested and committed to become an animator one day.
To start of,you could pick up flash animation.Sure its amateurish but the principles are more or less the same.
Practice drawing and modelling characters. For the modelling part, the softwares could be alittle hard to get but once you have the means to get them, learn to model and such.Such softwares are maya or 3DSmax.

Yeah I am. I actually just recently applied and interviewed for couple of universities that does animation, but they said that they won't offer me a place because at that time I only draw anime, so they told me that in 2011 (Since I applied for entry in 2010) I can come back to them and if I have shown improvement on my life drawings (Which they said I lack in my portfolio) they will accept me, and since 3 out of the 5 uni's that I applied to said that this means if I improve then I will have offer for 3 uni's. So now in summer I'm doing an extensive course on Life Drawing.
While I have flash to work in improving my animation but for now I actually only focus on hand drawn animation (frame by frame animation).

thats good to see you are working towards your dream.Yeah most want to see diversity in your artwork, not just anime drawings since most lecturers mentality is that anime is not art.
In future please avoid double posting, just edit your old post kay ;)

I've actually made friends with a few people at Dreamworks and they were able to give me some insight on how it works. With both Pixar and Dreamworks it's rare that they just hire a director randomly, typically he's a veteran company member whois plucked up from any given field in the company (They say it's typically an Animator and not a Conceptual Artist). If you want to join one of the bigger companies it's a good idea to pick something specific you want to do and just focus on that, If your applying as an Animator they won't really care if you can sketch they just want to see if you can animate well. For example the guy i spoke to is a pretty good artist but they don't have him do any kind of sketching or artwork for the company they just have him on character animation specifically.

Thats good and all but you see apart from actually doing animation I am also trying to create my own manga and I wont be able to do it if I lack any drawing skills. Also WOW you have a friends in Dreamworks I'm envious of you :).

they have a studio in redwood city, i met one of them at my church and asked him a few questions. He was cool enough to give me a tour of the studio where i got to meet some of their team.

Animation has been my dream field ever since I was in kindergarden ( honest!)
and now I'm starting college after going to an arts academy highschool for four years studying fine arts so I can become the best possible artist.
But now I'm looking more in the direction of directing projects and doing art direction/ writing.
Good luck to my fellow animation peers :) it'd be great to work with fellow fakku-ers someday on a project.

"CLAMP" Inspired me when I am in Elementary. So I thought it was easy -_-;. I have lot of Passion when I graduate in H-S, And enroll in animation course. My GAWD ITS SO TIRING. -_- 54 pages per second and our project is a 30 minutes. And it much harder when using a wacom. To complete a one scene. I took 800+ pages it has SC#1 BG#1 POS#780. Lol. And the project is Individual and must be colored -_-
