[Locked] USB HD not recognised, quick question.

I have a USB hard-drive, the hard-drive had its own power supply. It's 500gb and it was full. One day it stopped working and now Windows will not recognise the device.
I need the data, some of the stuff was very hard to find and had few seeders, took months to download and I haven't seen 85% of it.
If I were to take the shell off the hard drive I will void my warranty.
If I were to take the shell off would I be able to connect the hard drive inside, directly to a computer? I have the necessary adapters. Are my files likely to be there?

Sorry about that, just had to do it.
On topic, is it a Maxtor drive? I had the same prob with my 1 TB HDD, and if you want to fix it, the data inside will all be erased.

I had a 320gb maxtor until i hard format the disk with Thermite, because it pissed me off. Sometime if i end process a low k explorer.exe and re plug the disk it works(don't do it unless you know which one the running one).
