Virtual PC Reccomendation

I do miss the Virtual PC from Windows 7, and especially Windows XP mode. I just found Client Hyper-V from Microsoft and (rediscovered) VirtualBox from Oracle.
Does anyone have any opinions on the two of these, or any other ideas? I'm mostly looking to get a bit of experience with a Linux OS like Ubuntu and also to have a Virtual PC for WinXP, if I can find a copy of it. (Possibly Win7 as well, maybe)
I've got a decent laptop, and I can redownload Speccy if you guys want specifics.
TLDR; Advice on Virtual Machine Programs, OS to learn/acquire (free and preferably legitimate)
Thanks in advance!

Vmwareplayer is free and works fine for doing light work in vms.

You could just dual-boot...
VMWare is the standard free recommendation, as far as non-free oftware goes I personally prefer Hyper-V because it's easy to work with. Ubuntu isn't really suited for VM work, get Debian or one of the *buntu alternatives like Xubuntu or Lubuntu, which are much lighter and less bloated.
